The corporate hospital message is a signal. A signal that times have indeed changed in medicine. Brand over people wins for the 'system.' Some call the words, or lack thereof, toxic and brash. Gone are the days when CEOs share the journey of the departed leader and the legacy they leave behind. No dignified accolades, gratitude, or empty well wishes for the future. Perhaps Dr. Meyer had outgrown his role, and it was time for a change. Perhaps Dr. Meyer was a respectful voice of dissent that was unwelcome in the newer regime. Perhaps Dr. Meyer will be free to make a difference for care teams and patients with his next opportunity. Perhaps we will never know the truth. Silence is golden in corporate healthcare, otherwise, you're out.
