Our team has witnessed firsthand the incredible impact philanthropy can have on both individuals and communities. Here are some practical steps you can take to make a meaningful difference through giving: 1. Define your passion: Identify causes that resonate with you deeply. Whether it's education, healthcare, or environmental sustainability, find your calling. 2. Set clear goals: Determine what you want to achieve with your philanthropic efforts. Establishing clear objectives helps you measure your impact. 3. Budget wisely: Allocate a portion of your resources to philanthropy. Consider creating a separate fund or setting aside a percentage of your income for charitable giving. 4. Engage and learn: Get involved beyond financial contributions. Volunteer, attend events, and learn from experts in your chosen field to deepen your understanding. 5. Leverage your network: Collaborate with like-minded individuals, organizations, and fellow philanthropists. Together, you can amplify your impact. 6. Consider long-term impact: Explore options like endowments, scholarships, or sustainable projects that leave a lasting legacy. Remember, every act of generosity, no matter the scale, contributes to a better, more compassionate world. In philanthropy, trust is a cornerstone that is earned through relationships and dedication. A Bridgespan article (April 2024, link below) on trust-based philanthropy beautifully encapsulates this idea. From my experience on both the donor and doer sides, I’ve learned that trust is not immediate; it’s built over time. For those managing donations, it's crucial to go beyond the transaction. Understand who your donors are, appreciate them beyond their financial contributions, and genuinely care about them as individuals. Trust is fostered through honest communication, setting and achieving clear metrics, and being upfront when adjustments are needed. On the donor side, I encourage you to engage deeply with the nonprofits you support. Learn about their daily challenges, the stresses that keep their team members up at night, and not just the program metrics. When I was solely a donor, I didn't fully grasp these aspects, but understanding them now has given me a greater appreciation for the work being done - both in the field and in the office. EMERGING IMPACTS: The effects of MacKenzie Scott’s large, unrestricted gifts MacKenzie Scott’s giving has diverged from more common approaches in philanthropy, earning both praise and critique. With new data in year two of a three-year study, CEP further analyzes the effects and emerging impacts of these gifts. The report examines: to what extent Scott’s giving has influenced other funders’ approaches; whether nonprofits believe the grant increased their impact, and in what ways; how they have allocated the money; and whether they have experienced any unintended negative consequences. In a free webinar Nov. 30, 2-3:15pm ET, CEP’s research team will present the new data followed by a conversation with nonprofit and philanthropic leaders. Were you able to join us for our webinar in September on this same topic? If not, view its recording at your convenience before the CEP's webinar November 30!
