Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a co-owner of Manchester United, has presented a £2 billion idea to replace Old Trafford with a ground that can be utilised as a national venue for concerts, performances, and other forms of entertainment.
The stadium is already one of the most visited places in the North West, so this scheme will do wonders to boost its impressive visitation numbers even further.
It will also increase the average stay duration and frequency, making buy-to-let investments in the area all the more valuable.

As the N.Y./N.J. 2026 World Cup Host Committee begins preparing for the world’s biggest sporting event — especially the July 19 final — it already is having discussions with FIFA about the numerous ways it could become a weeklong celebration.
And the key phrase, co-Host Committee Managers Lauren LaRusso and Bruce Revman said, is “having discussions.”
The idea that FIFA is controlling every aspect of the event — even making seemingly nonsensical demands such as free public transportation for ticket-holders — isn’t accurate, they both said.
“All the things you hear about FIFA being impossible to work with — or not open to working with — just aren’t true,” LaRusso said. “Everything is up for discussion. And, I would say FIFA has been very accommodating.”
Revman agreed.
“I think FIFA understands that their goals, their mission, and our mission and our goals are aligned — not just for the region, but to grow the game,” he said. “So, they oftentimes defer to us — on a lot of matters.”
These discussions happen in person more than you may think — considering FIFA is based in Europe and N.Y./N.J. is one of 16 cities across North America that will serve as a host.
This week, LaRusso and Revman — and representatives from all those cities — are in Toronto for the first of two big all-host-city meetings this year. Each of these meetings has a key subject. This week, it’s stadium preparation and security, but all issues are on the table.

In the world of major sports events, is there still a value in delivering a multi-million pound Opening Ceremony. Have we lost sight of the purpose of these events and is it time for LOCs to be bold and have a rethink?
With event organisers looking at new financially sustainable models and declining linear broadcast numbers, you have to question if a 90-minute show is still the way forward. I'd be interested in hearing about ways in which LOCs adopt a digital first approach to showcasing the culture and art of a host city in a more cost effective and impactful way.

We need more regulation for event medical provision at events full stop. It’s time to stop using medical provision as a tick box exercise and choosing the cheapest provider and putting cost over people’s lives.
I’ve lost count where people are more animated and interested in the number of toilets and urinals that there available instead of the inadequate level of medical provision.
I must stress, this isn’t all events but it is becoming more and more it feels. More regulation, better and clearer “guidance”, more accountability.
