Focusing on long-term commercial gains 💪 Sponsorship case study: English football club Hampton & Richmond FC have made a unique commitment to partner with Movember... for $0. The partnership includes: 1) Front of jersey placement 2) Support with fundraising initiatives 3) Delivering initiatives to help young people and parents talk about mental health through football environments Why would they give up their prime real-estate (front of jersey) to Movember for free, instead of a high-paying commercial sponsor? Principal owner and ex-strategy director of Liverpool FC, Stefano Petruzzo FRGS is focused on: 1) Values & culture: Building a values-orientated club with a strong culture 2) Differentiation: A brand that is unique and positively perceived 3) Commercial: A brand that is appealing to partner with (based on the above) Sponsorships always involves a value exchange... Although Movember aren't providing a direct financial benefit, the association delivers goodwill and a transfer in brand equity, which improves Hampton & Richmond FC's appeal and likelihood of obtaining future sponsorships and achieving broader commercial outcomes. As the N.Y./N.J. 2026 World Cup Host Committee begins preparing for the world’s biggest sporting event — especially the July 19 final — it already is having discussions with FIFA about the numerous ways it could become a weeklong celebration. And the key phrase, co-Host Committee Managers Lauren LaRusso and Bruce Revman said, is “having discussions.” The idea that FIFA is controlling every aspect of the event — even making seemingly nonsensical demands such as free public transportation for ticket-holders — isn’t accurate, they both said. “All the things you hear about FIFA being impossible to work with — or not open to working with — just aren’t true,” LaRusso said. “Everything is up for discussion. And, I would say FIFA has been very accommodating.” Revman agreed. “I think FIFA understands that their goals, their mission, and our mission and our goals are aligned — not just for the region, but to grow the game,” he said. “So, they oftentimes defer to us — on a lot of matters.” These discussions happen in person more than you may think — considering FIFA is based in Europe and N.Y./N.J. is one of 16 cities across North America that will serve as a host. This week, LaRusso and Revman — and representatives from all those cities — are in Toronto for the first of two big all-host-city meetings this year. Each of these meetings has a key subject. This week, it’s stadium preparation and security, but all issues are on the table.

Cons: 1. **Cost**: Hosting elaborate opening and closing ceremonies can be expensive, requiring significant financial resources. 2. **Logistics**: Planning and executing ceremonies can be complex and time-consuming, requiring coordination of various elements like performers, equipment, logistics and security. 3. **Attendee engagement**: Depending on the length and format of the ceremonies, some attendees may find them tedious or lose interest, affecting engagement. 4. **Weather dependency**: Outdoor ceremonies are subject to weather conditions, which can impact the experience and logistics. 5. **Resource allocation**: Resources spent on ceremonies may detract from other important aspects of the event, such as programming, facilities, or services. Considering these pros and cons can help in deciding what to consider in order to host an opening and closing ceremonies aligning with the overall goals and priorities of the sporting event.

We need more regulation for event medical provision at events full stop. It’s time to stop using medical provision as a tick box exercise and choosing the cheapest provider and putting cost over people’s lives. I’ve lost count where people are more animated and interested in the number of toilets and urinals that there available instead of the inadequate level of medical provision. I must stress, this isn’t all events but it is becoming more and more it feels. More regulation, better and clearer “guidance”, more accountability. Just my personal view.
