As an ally I always question whether or not I should post my own thoughts or feelings on any re-post such as this one. In the spirit of National Coming Out Day I feel I should at least write this: I am coming out as a proud ally, I may not be the loudest or the most succinct but I believe in equality for all and cannot understand any mindset that does not agree. Someone being LGBTQIA2S+ is as “weird” as someone being straight or cisgender. Each person should feel safe and comfortable with being themselves, not who some in society expects them to be. Frigga in Avengers: Endgame said it quite succinctly: “Everyone fails at who they’re supposed to be, Thor (insert any name here). A measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are.” Everyone should be given a chance to be who they are without fear of judgement or reprisal. And it shouldn’t take a fictional character to tell us this, it should be automatic.
Coming out can be a big moment for anyone identifying as LGBTQ+. On this National Coming Out Day and throughout the year, learn how to come together and support one another. Whether it be at home, within your community or at the workplace, we’ve put together resources for everyone to feel equipped and supported. comingout.day 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

No matter where you are in your journey, you are seen, you are heard, and you are valued. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Over the past several years there has been an increased awareness of the unique difficulties that older adults in the LGBTQ+ community face as they contemplate accessing services. In a recent national survey by AARP, more than 60 percent of LGBTQ+ older adults surveyed indicated that they would be concerned about how they would be treated when accessing long-term care services. Survey participants disclosed fears of refusal of care, heightened anxieties of abuse or neglect, and concerns that they may be forced to hide their true identity. HRC has a wealth of information to support LGBTQ+ folk in their own journey as well as educational materials for allies. https://lnkd.in/gjvk3pjQ You can also work to make your long-term care community a safe space for LGBTQ+ elders to live their life authentically through the LEI. The LEI supports long-term care communities to adopt policies and best practices for offering culturally competent and responsive care to LGBTQ+ older adults by providing communities with resources, tools, and technical assistance. Learn more about this crucial initiative here: https://thelei.org/
