Gotta love sports......... Those who know me, know I love sports. Playing them, watching most of them. I’ll sit through hours of all sorts of matches, love the fans’ energy, and the emotions that come with the wins and losses. These weeks are especially energising with the European Cup, Wimbledon, F1 racing and in a few weeks, the Olympics. I’m always in awe of the preparation that the athletes put in to reach this professional level. People often talk about the motivation these players have. Of course, motivation is an important factor, but I focus more on their admirable amount of discipline. I think many sports’ situations have learnings for the business world, particularly team sports where everyone needs to have each other's back. In June, I listened to a talk by former Navy Seal Mike Hayes who based on his experience also addressed team spirit and questioned what you should be prepared to do for the team-member you have the least connection with. The answer was clear: everything. In order to be successful in business, I think creating this team spirit and a feeling of togetherness and solidarity is essential. Sharing the pains of the losses and the setbacks and likewise celebrating the progress and the wins. Lastly, with these big tournaments like the European Cup football, entire nations come together and incredible bonds are created between fans, proving again how sports can unite and make people transcend their differences.
