🌟🌟 What does it take to shape the future of civil engineering? Just ask Elizabeth Ruedas, PE and Isamar E. Their dedication has propelled them to remarkable heights. Elizabeth, a surface water project manager at Michael Baker International, made history as one of the youngest members to serve on the ASCE Board of Direction. Isamar, now a civil engineer with the Federal Highway Administration, has followed in her footsteps, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the table. Their journey from college pals to influential leaders underscores the millennial takeover in civil engineering. As Elizabeth and Isamar put it, it's not just about filling roles but celebrating achievements and investing in leadership development. Which makes a current civil engineering student like myself excited for the future. But what truly sets Elizabeth and Isamar apart is their commitment to paving the way for young members to make an impact. They're not just sitting at the table; they're actively advocating for the inclusion of younger voices in decision-making processes. Through their tireless efforts, they've helped implement changes in ASCE's bylaws, ensuring that younger members have a seat at the table and a voice in shaping the future of the profession. I hope to be able to be in one of these seats someday and do my part. Their impact extends far beyond the boardroom. They've mentored countless young engineers, inspiring them to pursue leadership roles and make a difference in their communities. Their dedication to fostering the next generation of civil engineering leaders is evident in every initiative they undertake, from supporting student outreach programs to championing diversity and inclusion efforts. It's clear that Elizabeth and Isamar's dedication, passion, and leadership are driving positive change. As ASCE President Marsia Geldert-Murphey rightly puts it, they embody the qualities of capable, compassionate, and strong leaders. I'm looking forward to diving into this and exploring how my work in civil engineering and sustainable development aligns with the latest trends. #CivilEngineering #SustainableDevelopment

First, thank you for serving as ASCE President. Marsia raises several good points, especially about backfilling our civil engineering staff as many of us have or will be retired soon. I hope we can pass along our wisdom and knowledge. Getting involved as advisors or guest speakers to engineering colleges in your area (and paying for lunch for the class) is a great way to give back. We have lots of lessons learned and the technology to design resilient infrastructure. However, some designs will cost more both for engineering and construction (we could design bridges that won't burn and sewers that do not flood, but can we afford them) and documenting the final decisions will be important. And do not discount that time is money - design time, delay time, detour time, construction time, lead time for supplies. I don't always enjoy the public meeting process but we do our best to inform the public of our projects. We do need to do a better job of explaining the projects in terms that non-engineers will understand to get their support. Use the name of the road not the SR#, use feet and miles not meters and km, keeping in mind the audience is not an agency or DOT. Not everyone will be happy but they should be confident that we made sound, ethical decisions and considered all comments, options, variables, costs and mitigated as many impacts as possible.

Let's continue the conversation and explore how we, as a community of civil engineers, can collectively leverage our skills and resources to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
