Today marks an exciting close to August with #Singapore pushing ahead on Article 6 efforts to enhance international cooperation across global carbon markets 🌏. 📢 Recent updates ✔ Singapore and Vietnam exchanged a letter of intent after substantively concluding negotiations of a legally binding implementation agreement for carbon credits with corresponding adjustments (https://lnkd.in/gp_pe_tM) ✔Singapore and Sri Lanka signed a MOU to collaborate on a legally binding implementation agreement to develop a framework for carbon credits with corresponding adjustments (https://lnkd.in/gjTStz9P) ✔Singapore and Chile signed a MOU to collaborate on carbon markets and carbon pricing (https://lnkd.in/gag_8BD8) ✔To-date, Singapore has signed similar MOUs or letters of intent with 14 countries. These steps pave the way for Singapore and other countries to voluntarily cooperate with each other to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs), while ensuring credits are not double-counted when they are transferred or sold internationally. In terms of relevance to #corporates, after these implementation agreements are concluded, #carbontax liable companies in Singapore will be able to surrender eligible carbon credits to offset up to 5 per cent of their taxable emissions from 2024. Last year, Singapore and #Ghana also substantively concluded negotiations on an implementation agreement on carbon credits. Building on this effort, GenZero invested in a land restoration project in Ghana in June, which could mark a first for Singapore if it generates carbon credits with corresponding adjustments under the Singapore-Ghana Implementation Agreement when completed. Ghana provides a conducive environment for 🌳 nature-based restoration projects, with its biologically-diverse #forest ecosystems and productive #agriculture and #agroforestry lands, represented by a mosaic of forest reserves and national parks that are surrounded by farms and fallows. From a governance and policy context, Ghana has also been progressively developing its climate and carbon-related readiness, with a clear Climate Change Policy, comprehensive National #REDD+ Strategy, committed NDCs, and one of the first few countries globally to release a comprehensive Article 6 policy. 🗓️2nd day in Kuala Lumpur for the UIC delegation. It was also an important day, marked in particular by UIC's participation in the High-Level 15th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia 🌏 The Forum was organised by the Ministry of Transport, Government of Malaysia, the Ministry of Environment, Government of Japan (MoE-J), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations Centre for Regional Development, Division for Sustainable Development Goals, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNCRD-DSDG/UN DESA). The theme was: “Investing in Sustainable Transport: Catalyzing Economic and Social Development in the SDG Era” 🌳 The Minister for Transport, Malaysia, HE Loke Siew Fook outlined their target to elevate public transport modal share to 40% by 2030 and reach 60% by 2050, highlighting investment in rail with the Mass Rapid Transit, the East Coast Rail link and the Rapid Transit System link which significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. 👉 On the subject of finance, François DAVENNE emphasised that the UIC was currently asking countries to honour the priorities set in their policies and to take account of the need to commit to reducing carbon emissions. Drawing on the "polluter pays" principle, he said the UIC was advocating that investment in transport infrastructure should be based on climate potential. There is growing evidence that avoidance and transfer strategies (such as modal shift) can account for 40-60% of emission reductions in the transport sector, at lower costs than improvement strategies (such as electrification). Countries, in collaboration with the international financial institutions, must also make progress in defining a new, more ambitious collective financing objective, with innovative mechanisms for climate financing, in order to increase investment in climate-friendly technologies and solutions and ensure greater accessibility. #Cooperation #MoreTrains #DesignABetterFuture #ESTForum #SustainbleTransport

The IMPACT if this happens will change Malaysia 🇲🇾 forever! In a groundbreaking development, the Malaysian and Singaporean governments, led by Prime Ministers Anwar Ibrahim and Lee Hsien Loong, have announced a historic agreement on the proposed Johor-Singapore special economic zone (SEZ). Prime Minister Lee emphasized the SEZ's objective to facilitate smoother cross-border movement for those working on both sides of the Causeway. He highlighted the potential for enhanced arrangements benefiting companies in the SEZ by ensuring access to the right mix of skilled professionals. During the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders' Retreat, discussions centered on cooperation, outstanding bilateral issues, and plans for the SEZ. #HistoricAgreement #RegionalDevelopment The SEZ, announced in October, is expected to bolster infrastructure, connectivity, and job opportunities in Johor and Singapore. Prime Minister Lee outlined plans for a feasibility study and emphasized the potential benefits for the Iskandar development region in Johor. Notably, the SEZ aims to streamline the flow of goods through special tax arrangements and bonded warehouses, fostering easier border flows. #SEZDevelopment #CrossBorderFacilitation Acknowledging the short timeline, both leaders expressed optimism about finalizing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) by January 11 next year. They highlighted the urgency of addressing outstanding issues such as maritime delimitation, reclamation at Pedra Branca, water, and airspace. Despite these challenges, Prime Minister Lee expressed confidence in finding mutually beneficial solutions. #TimelineOptimism #IssueResolution Additionally, the leaders emphasized their commitment to resolving airspace management issues and updating arrangements for air traffic services. On the topic of water supply, Prime Minister Anwar affirmed Malaysia's commitment and proposed joint efforts for sustainable management of the Johor river. #AirspaceManagement #SustainableWaterManagement Beyond the SEZ, the leaders unveiled plans to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy and support the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through a memorandum of understanding. The enhanced Malaysia-Singapore Business Development Fund will further facilitate joint projects in the green and digital economy. These initiatives underscore the commitment of both nations to fostering economic ties and addressing shared challenges. #RenewableEnergyCooperation #SMEDevelopment Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad Tengku Zafrul Aziz Fahmi Fadzil Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) Prakash Nagarajan Alvin Foo Iskandar Investment Berhad Dato Idzham Mohd Hashim Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) Source: https://lnkd.in/g8aynu95
