From our #placemaking work while at Project for Public Spaces we’ve helped UNHABITAT shift to take on placemaking principles. To be more place-led, including all people. Over ten years later ethical practices have continued to advance to include more than just humans but all animals and life. Today the climate crisis is only worse due to lack of bold wise action. We need to move beyond “people-centered smart cities” and its limited views of anthropocentrism & unquestioned technocracy. Many UN voices have been questioning technocratic urbanism (aka smart cities) but in 2024 it’s time to boldly move past this modernist 20th Century backwards ideology entirely. Humanistic technocracy won’t save us. Creating better UX for technocracy won’t save us We must acknowledge the #climatecrisis and shift toward wiser concepts & frameworks that extend beyond human concerns, and include responsibility for all life in our finite planet. We need urgent shifts toward sustainable ways we already know but many fear to enact like #carfree cities, and indigenous/#permaculture approaches that seek greater virtuous life cycles in both local adjacent rural and urban agricultures. This means “controversial” simple ideas like making space for urban composting of what we discard as more important spatial land use than luxury condos. And more ideas like these. Including wisely regulated responsible use of validated legitimate ethical technology — not the lastest extractive right wing cultural logic scheme from Silicon Valley and its parrots. Technocratic logic got us into the climate crisis, no amount of additional technocratic logic will save us. “Smart” has distracted us and failed. Let’s get wise.

Today is World Environment Day 🌎🐝 One of the many days of importance and observation on the UN Environment Programme calendar. Our team goes through the global calendar at the start of each year, and we identify the days that we feel most aligned with AND that we are actively contributing towards; personally and/or collectively. Due to the nature of our work, we are fortunate enough to be involved in one realm of the theme of this years day, which is #generationrestoration - everyday we work towards greener buildings and cities 🧱 The theme may seem abstract, but we all influence and are impacted by how well our land is taken care of and restored. 40% of the worlds population is impacted by land degradation and approximately 1 billion hectares of land across the world are earmarked for restoration - almost half of that is in Sub-Saharan Africa 🌍 Our planet and our people need us! Participation in today doesn't need to be loud; you can go on to the United Nations website and read up on the day and learn about land restoration, you can then share this knowledge with those close to you - today is all about purposeful education - understand the importance of the day, by learning what is important and why. On days like today, our team usually look at what we're doing internally as an organisation and as individuals to live a life that's more harmonious with the planet, we share ideas with each other on how to improve on our efforts and we setup metrics and create systems that hold us accountable - we find that accountability to someone else is helpful when implementing new practices and routines. We don't always get it right, but we're always inspired to try and to do better, and it's a blessing that we're surrounded by people who support the same culture. We encourage you to learn one important fact about land restoration and to commit to doing one thing, however small you may think it is, commit to it, write it down and do it. One year from now, you'll look back at that simple commitment and see how powerful the impact was 🙌🏾 May today be a day of enlightenment for us all 🌿 #worldenvironmentday #generationrestoration #education #learning

🏙️ Today, on World Cities Day, we're celebrating the heartbeat of our global community – our cities. This year's theme is 'Financing a sustainable urban future for all,' emphasizing responsible planning and development. Responding to the surge in urban population seems to result in either the time-consuming process of building capabilities to harmonise goals and collaborate effectively, or a tendency to address the urgency by developing infrastructure without any consideration of the former. However, infrastructure development cannot be put on hold while perfect policies and institutions are put in place. These ends need not be mutually exclusive: investment in urban development does not have to be withheld until fully capable institutions are in place, nor do governments need to resort to "non-invasive" planning and building of urban infrastructure regardless of institutions and policies. It is crucial to improve the effectiveness of managing urban development through better collaboration between different levels and sectors of government. CITIES CAN BE ENGINES FOR POSITIVE CHANGE. #worldcities #urbansustainability #inclusivecities UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) United Nations

One of the incorrect myths is that UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) only focuses it's work and attention on Urban Areas, I even heard that we don't see any function or importance to rural areas.. Well, that is totally and completely wrong, as we at UN Habitat consider the rural urban linkage as one of the main strong points for proper urbanization, we do have a context driven framework, which has been tested and applied in many countries, it proved it's functionality and effectiveness, which inform the decision makers on how to strengthen the rural areas, benefit from its economical resources, social capital, population and location to support the proper and well managed urbanization. Similarly, how urban areas and cities can do the same for rural areas. I just wanted to share this very short message here and I do encourage all to visit UN Habitat website to see how and what we do in this very important theme..

The Global Future Cities programme is transforming the lives of millions of people in south-east Asia. With 13 key infrastructure projects in nine cities across six countries, the programme is addressing the challenges of poor transport, piecemeal urban planning, and inadequate climate resilience. One example is the transformation of a former red-light district in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This project is creating a new public space that will provide a safe and inclusive environment for all residents. Another example is the development of a green transport corridor in Hanoi, Vietnam. This corridor will connect the city's historic centre with its new economic zones, and it will help to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion. Learn more about the Global #FutureCities programme and how you can get involved.
