This November we are recognizing #HomelessnessAwarenessMonth, by sharing important statistics that reflect the local homelessness crisis here in our own community. In Dutchess County, 1,276 households and 1,622 individuals sought support, facing an average of 240 days of homelessness. This means that for more than half of the a year, individuals and families will grapple with the harsh realities of life without a stable home. These statistics remind us of the urgent need for action. It's not just about raising awareness; it's about working to create real, lasting change. Hudson River Housing works everyday providing shelter, housing services, and affordable housing solutions for housing insecure members of our community. Together, we can help shorten the duration of homelessness and make a lasting impact in the lives of those in need. Join us this Homeless Awareness Month in advocating for change. It's time to shine a light on the devastating connection between domestic violence and homelessness. Too many women and their children escaping abusive homes means plunging into the darkness of homelessness. November 11-18 is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week! This is an annual week of action sponsored by @NationalCoalitionfortheHomeless and @ResolvetoFightPoverty working to bring awareness to hunger and homelessness through a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events! In the wealthiest country in the world, it’s an outrage that so many people go hungry and without stable, safe housing. Nobody should have to choose which of their basic necessities to forgo, but that is the reality for so many of us. As a society, we have more than enough resources to ensure everybody has their basic needs met. At the Alliance for Rights and Recovery, we know that access to food is key to health and stable housing is a key to community success. Learn about our work towards housing. On this Homeless Person's Memorial Day, let's take a moment to reflect on some eye-opening facts about homelessness both locally and nationally.   Did you know? 1. As many as 1 out of every 30 children in the US experiences homelessness. 2. The fastest-growing population of homeless individuals is older adults. Our elders, who have given so much to society, often find themselves without shelter or support. 3. In 2023 to-date, our local 211 has handled a staggering 9,675 calls related to housing and employment assistance. This is a clear indication of the pressing need for affordable housing and living wage employment in our community.   At United Way, we believe everyone deserves a safe place to call their own and should be treated with dignity and respect.   Let's remember that we can all make a difference by looking out for each other, volunteering, and advocating for policies that address homelessness.

Punishing people for taking refuge in a tent is not the answer to solving our homelessness crisis. And yet, the home secretary wants to restrict the use of tents by homeless people, arguing that people see it as a ‘lifestyle choice’. It is no such thing. People sleep rough because: - They have no safe home to go to - They can’t afford to rent or own a home - They’re struggling with unresolved trauma Our nation’s homelessness services provision is failing. And that’s why we are leading an innovative campaign to see national policy and provision changed. We want to see a country in which no person facing homelessness has to sleep rough - in a tent or otherwise - but instead has the housing and the support they need to flourish again. We are calling on Suella Braverman and the government to recognise and respond to the fact that we can’t break the cycle of homelessness without first addressing people’s trauma. #HopeNotHomelessness #TraumaHomelessness #Homelessness #RoughSleeping

Our communities are experiencing a crisis of youth and young adult homelessness. But we have evidence that progress is possible. A new report, released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA, shows that focused and sustained partnerships between state and federal agencies, nonprofit partners, and philanthropy have moved the needle on youth homelessness in Washington state. It's clear we have much work left to do, but this report affirms the need to deepen our commitment to this work.
