Did you know that this iconic bridge is designated as Los Angeles City Historic-Cultural Monument No. 224? It's been a part of our city's landscape since 1926, standing as a testament to our rich transportation history and architectural heritage. Constructed during the major bridge-building decade of 1923-1933, the Cesar Chavez/Macy Street Bridge is one of a group of 12 river bridges significant for their role in shaping the transportation landscape of Los Angeles. It wouldn’t be Preservation Month without dedicating a post to our expertise in leading Section 106 reviews! Under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 reviews are vital for identifying and safeguarding historic resources from potential negative impact caused by federally funded construction projects. When such projects arise, preservation specialists (like us) step in to assess the historic resources in the project's vicinity and how the project’s implementation may affect their location, design, setting, feeling, materials, workmanship, and association. One of our Section 106 projects involves the proposed reconstruction of Metra Commuter Rail’s 59th Street Station in Hyde Park. This project encompasses the reconstruction of street-level depots, new platform-level headhouses, and adjacent limestone embankment reconstruction. Located just west of Chicago’s Jackson Park at the eastern end of the Midway Plaisance, the station has served the University of Chicago and Hyde Park since the 1890s. The railroad's historical significance is grounded in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, known primarily for its influence on Chicago’s architecture and regional urban planning, and also where traction power, the electrical system that continues to run our transit system today was unveiled to the world. Through this type of historic assessment, we determined that the proposed changes would impact the historic integrity of the surrounding historic districts and following this determination, AltusWorks played an instrumental role in advising on station design changes as well as the development of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to mitigate this affect. We take pride in our role within this public process, which identifies and preserves Chicago's historic resources while facilitating necessary improvements to aging infrastructure for the benefit of all. Workers laboured amidst rubble, birds circled overhead, and spray-painted arrows marked the chaos and heroism. Abandoned structures, like a converted Burger King turned NYPD command post, told the story of that fateful day. The rain-soaked tributes and messages on the perimeter fence, adding to their poignant weight. Visitors absorbed the scene in solemn silence, treating it as a sacred site. John Diaz highlights the importance of the architecture of ground zero, as a place for hope and reflection. In my opinion the architecture of the Ground zero memorial has more importance and a further impact on all those who were affected by the attacks. There is a psychological parallel between making a mark on the landscape with a building and the exercise of political power. Both depend on the imposition of will. Certainly, seeing their worldview confirmed by reducing an entire city to the scale of a doll's house in an architectural model has an inherent appeal for those who regard the individual as of no account. ... Architecture feeds the egos of the susceptible. They grow more and more dependent on it to the point where architecture becomes an end to itself, seducing the addicts as they build more and more on an even larger scale. Building is the means by which the egotism of the individual is expressed in its most naked form. Here's a section cut slicing the historic Baltimore ice factory we scanned a few months ago. It's the three-story portion at the south end of the industrial plant originally built in 1905.⁠ According to the Historic-Structures.com website, this area "featured the engine room on the first floor and filters on the second floor, third floor and roof.
