That’s High Speed indeed! Introducing a new universal unit of speed: 1 C = 1600 feet / 16 years = 100 feet / year 1 C (pronounced 1 Cali) is the upper speed limit for any construction project in California. As the speed approaches 1 Cali, budget grows to infinity. If two twins are separated and one of them is involved in a construction project moving at the speed of 1 Cali, and they meet again after the completion of the project, the resting twin will have achieved immortality.

Opened in 1961, when bridges were constructed for a 50-year lifespan, the I-5 Bridge over Columbia River is long overdue for a replacement. Average Daily Traffic was about 35K 63 years ago and has mushroomed to over 300K at its peak, shortly before Covid. Thankfully, the functionally obsolete bridge will be replaced with two new 100-year bridges (NB & SB) designed to accommodate seismic activity and projected traffic growth. Case in point: Illinois Tollway’s Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, which improves connectivity for drivers in NW Illinois and provides a vital link to O'Hare International Airport. We performed overall Corridor #ConstructionManagement, including overseeing contracts and scheduling for about 20 projects, many concurrent. According to a report from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, one in three bridges in the U.S. needs repair or replacement. We partner with agencies nationwide to ensure local bridges are safe and dependable for generations to come. The Vermont Agency of Transportation selected us as the Prime Consultant for Phase 1 design services to rehabilitate nine bridge structures along the Green Mountain Railroad in southern Vermont. Throughout the project, we will look to minimize impacts on rail operations and local cultural or environmental factors. This includes examining innovative bridge replacement options and Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques to reduce onsite construction while considering ease of maintenance and the region’s extreme weather. Landmark highways such as NH-150C have a unique set of elements that need to be incorporated in the planning process to ensure maximum efficiency of the roadway. One such challenge was to reduce conflicting movement of vehicles by finding a way around intersections. It was decided to construct two double trumpet interchanges that allowed for vehicle crossing without putting a pause to vehicle flow. The two trumpets at chainage KM 187+234 and at KM 202+059 use grade separation to have a continued crossing above the main highway allowing for free flow of traffic on both routes. A wise man once told me you can gauge the health of any city by counting the number of tower cranes in the skyline. That instantly made a LOT of sense to me, so I looked into it a little more. I found something really cool: The RLB Crane Index is a bi-annual report prepared by Rider Levett Bucknall that tallies the cranes in 14 major cities around the U.S. and Canada. It’s so cool to me how a single data point can tell you so much about a complex system. The Q1 2024 report should be coming out later this month or early next. I want to move to the PNW this year so I’ve got my eye on Seattle. I’ve heard that civil infrastructure spending has been going up, but private sector construction has been slowing down, so I’m expecting a decreased crane count from last year.
