3 days later and I’m still processing the incredible experience that was #ZCON. Attending the first conference with an all Gen Z speaker lineup was already a dream, but getting to interview people from all over the country with different backgrounds and beliefs and talents and dreams reminded me why it’s so important to pass the mic to Gen Z and let them do the talking. There was one thing I asked in almost every interview: What do you wish brands understood more about our generation? An answer I heard over and over is that it’s easy to tell when a brand isn’t showing up authentically – when they’re trying cater to the idea they have of Gen Z instead of Gen Zers themselves. In order to avoid that, the most important thing to do is simply acknowledge that we are not a monolith (despite what the think pieces might have you believe.) No Gen Zer is the same, and there’s nothing worse than being put into a box. We just want to be seen for who we are. I think that's something all generations can find common ground on tbh. What gave me so much hope is that ZCON was full of industry leaders who are changing the game and committed to meeting young people where they are – and even more Gen Zers who are driving that change from within.
