A French court of appeal orders that #WindTurbines be dismantled, in a move to protect golden eagles. The case serves as a useful reminder of how renewable energies take a huge toll on #biodiversity. At #COP28, governments called for #RenewableEnergy installed capacity to be tripled by 2030, sadly without taking steps towards a significant decrease in the production of energy. However, adding more #Renewables to more #FossilFuels is not in line with #sustainability. Requiring more efficient renewables does not address the problem either, as efficiency gains still enable an overall increase in energy production and resource extraction. In this context, the EU's current move towards exempting renewable energy projects from an in-depth analysis of their impacts on biodiversity is highly problematic, especially given the insufficient targets of #EnergySobriety endorsed by the EU. It is time to move away from silo thinking in policy-making, and to address simultaneously #ClimateChange and #Biodiversity concerns.
