Two senators are pushing for answers. On October 5th, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Thom Tillis sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense containing questions about housing availability and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Senators want to know: Housing waitlist for EFMP families The number of ADA-compliant homes at each installation Number of housing complaints received from EFMP families What penalties housing companies face for not providing ADA-compliant housing How many penalties have occurred over the past five years The deadline for Defense officials to respond to the Senators is October 19th. Sweeping changes to how sexual assaults and other serious crimes are handled by military prosecutors will begin to go into effect on Friday, five months ahead of the deadline mandated by Congress for the reforms. President Joe Biden is scheduled to sign an executive order on Friday formalizing rules surrounding the military’s Offices of Special Trial Counsel, independent prosecutors who will now decide whether to prosecute certain offenses including as sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and murder. “U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Adam Smith (D-WA), Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, along with Don Bacon (R-NE) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Quality of Life Panel, sent a letter calling on President Biden to support improving the quality of life for service members and military families in his Fiscal Year 2025 Department of Defense Budget request. In the letter, the members wrote, “Our service members represent the best our nation has to offer and are central to our national security. The All-Volunteer Force has been the foundation of America’s national defense for the last five decades. Yet the committee’s quality of life inquiry thus far has revealed an alarming erosion of military quality of life that, if not addressed quickly, will soon place the All-Volunteer Force at risk. According to VA’s 2023 annual suicide prevention report, a growing number of women veterans are dying by suicide. The suicide rate for female veterans has nearly doubled in the two decades from 2001 to 2021, the most recent year with data available. I think for people to be educated on the Extreme Numbers that are not registered in the VA System, that the amount of Veterans taking their life is beyond comprehension. The last of our Vietnam Vets are living there entire lives with the Natural Physical Fate to the Gate and their souls to the next journey, the Patriots that felt more American on September 12, 2001 after seeing the horrific tragedy of September 11, knowing and willingly signed up to earn back our Country are now getting out after 20 years. The two political Parties fighting is hurting them. I never state my opinion on my political views but I wanted to say that I wish everyday Until Veteran Suicide ends , we make a stance that every flag, every single day should be at half mass. The sad thing is, some don't even know what it means, but more so some don't even know that our Veterans are taking their life. They have the perception that they are well taken care of, and yes some are but not all. I think one is two many and I know you all do too. Educating Civilians about what goes on with Veterans will open a new eye with new advocacy, knowledge , ideas, support and that's so detrimental. There will never be another September 12, 2001. Recognizing the inadequacy of existing provisions, the committee emphasized the extension of benefits to the families of Agniveers who make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Under the proposed scheme, families of Agniveers slain in action will now receive the same benefits as those provided to the next of kin of regular soldiers, including pension rights. Additionally, the committee has recommended augmenting the ex-gratia amount for families of soldiers who perish in the line of duty.
