💙 Why Archway Academy? Because here, education and recovery go hand in hand. 📚 Archway Academy offers a beacon of hope and support for high school students navigating the challenging journey of recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges. With nearly 1,000 high school students in Houston alone in treatment or recovery programs, Archway Academy's critical mission addresses a desperate need. The sobriety rate for teens returning to traditional schools post-treatment plummets to 20% within the first 90 days. 🚨 Why? Because traditional high schools lack the necessary support staff and accountability that Archway provides. 🙌 Our school is more than just a place to learn; it's a community where students are embraced at all stages of their recovery and educational journeys.

We are keenly aware that what community means to an adult and what that means to a middle school boy are not always synonymous. Our boys have many different communities that they interact with regularly. They’ve got obvious connections with family, friends, and teams. But even the word friend is different these days. There are old school friends, new school friends, friends with whom we only talk to online. So the challenge is, how do we get all these super awesome unique individuals together to form a community? Learn the answer and more from our Director of Student Activities and Teacher, Ms. Andres in her new blog post! https://lnkd.in/gJ9myUfD

I am deeply moved by this powerful statement from Abe Fernández, the Children's Aid VP of Collective Impact and Director of the National Center for Community Schools. Luck should never be the determining factor when it comes to a child's access to opportunities. It is our collective responsibility to advocate for equitable education systems that provide every child with the opportunity they truly deserve. Education is a catalyst for change, a powerful tool that has the potential to transform lives. However, we cannot ignore the systemic barriers and disparities that hinder equal access to quality education. It is time to break down these barriers and scale opportunities, ensuring that no child is left behind. By working collaboratively with community organizations, educators, policymakers, and families, we can create a level playing field for all students. We must embrace innovative approaches, such as community schools, that address the holistic needs of our students, empowering them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Let us envision an educational landscape where zip codes, family backgrounds, and chance play no role in determining a child's future. Instead, let us empower each child with the tools, resources, and support necessary to unlock their full potential. #OpportunityForAll #EducationForChange #ScalingOpportunity

This week we visited St Mark’s School in Halewood and were blown away by the wonderful current relational practice that they do already. We always start our whole school training by celebrating what a school is already doing well. Do you smile and welcome students into your classroom? Do you contact parents to celebrate and not just to berate? Are you actively listening to students when they tell you a little about themselves? When you walk past a student on the corridor, do you smile and acknowledge them? Do you ask students how their weekend has been? Don’t dismiss the little things we do every day as educators that make connections, build relationships and make students feel welcomed. You are forging bonds, building communities and proactively developing relationships. Sometimes the simplest action can make the biggest difference to a child. #restorativepractice #relationalpractice #relationships #connection #community #southernareaheads
