When I heard Lt. Col. Joseph Huitt speak to a group of students from Augusta University's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences during a visit to Fort Eisenhower last December, I knew he was someone I wanted to feature as an outstanding alumnus of the university. It was an honor to listen to and then tell others about his story through this project, especially as we celebrate Independence Day this week. “The biggest thing I tell folks is, ‘Don’t be afraid to try different things. Don’t be afraid to fail. Keep looking for opportunities,’” said Huitt. “I didn’t join the Army until I was 21. I did other things before I joined the Army, and even throughout my time with the Army, I’ve done a myriad of things.”

Yesterday was Day 1 for Dr. Russell T. Keen as he steps into the role of president of Augusta University. He's no stranger to Augusta University, or Augusta and the CSRA, and he learned from one of the best for the last 14 years. “I already know and love this place, and I think when we really dig into the culture, challenge one another and, most importantly, hold each other accountable, we’ll far exceed our greatest expectations,” he said when I sat down with him to learn more about his vision for his first 30-60-90 days and beyond.

I had a blast serving as the volunteer photographer and videographer at the 2024 American Canoe Association - South Carolina Kayaking 101 class held at Aiken State Park. Any time I get to make videos like this, it’s a good day.

Augusta University's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences continues to strategically grow, and will now offer a new Bachelor of Science in Data Science. This program has plenty of ceiling and I know the faculty will continue to adapt this program to best meet the growing needs of the workforce in Georgia, the region and the nation.

Augusta University has signed a statewide articulation agreement with the Technical College System of Georgia, the first of its kind in the state. The new agreement will make it easier for students who earn an associate degree in cybersecurity from any of the 22 technical colleges in Georgia to then attend AU's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. With almost half a million unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the U.S., this will be a step in the right direction.

I have written several pieces about the medical illustration program at AU (1 of only 4 graduate-level programs in the country, and the oldest of those), and each one has been so different. It was a lot of fun to meet McKenzie and hear how she has used her skills in cinematography and social media to show how she brings her illustrations to life. I feel it makes her work that much more compelling compared to just sharing the final piece.

I had a front-row seat as some of our cybersecurity students took part in a grueling competition a few weeks ago. Over the span of 2 days, they went up against 7 other teams that have more resources and more history in producing cybersecurity professionals, as well as 27 of the best cybersecurity professionals in the nation. I enjoyed getting to know these students and am excited to see how they use this experience moving forward.

AU's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences continues to search for a Communications Specialist. If you know someone with at least 3 years of experience in communications who is looking for an opportunity, please send them our way. They do not need to have an advanced understanding of cybersecurity and computer engineering, but a love of learning and the ability to break down complex ideas into more digestible stories is certainly encouraged. Augusta University has become a hub of innovation and education in the fields of computer sciences and cybersecurity. Since 2015, AU has partnered with Augusta Tech by establishing key pathways for students to earn an associate's degree at ATC before transferring to AU where they have a leg up on earning a bachelor's degree. The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences at AU recently held a workshop for all 22 technical colleges and schools in Georgia to lay the foundation for a more broad articulation agreement, which will only enhance Georgia's place as a training ground for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

1wThanks again Milledge for this wonderful opportunity and thanks to the AU team for putting together such a wonderful interview and video. Happy to share my story especially if it helps others make a decision on joining the military as there are a lot of people who just don’t know what it’s actually like serving. Open invitation for this network. I’m always open to anyone wanting to talk and help them make an informed decision to join. Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🫡
