As we approach the UK General Election, it was great to catch up with Marsha de Cordova, who is standing for re-election as MP for Battersea. During her visit, we talked about ways to support and enhance community initiatives around Battersea. The aim is to create a more sustainable and connected neighbourhood. 🌱 Over the past year we have worked with Marsha on a range of projects, including: ⏩ Awards to celebrate businesses in Wandsworth ⏩ Marsha’s Summer School, which aims to introduce young people into the world of politics ⏩ Our CEO Kirsty Leighton speaking at the House of Commons about the impact of Brexit on local businesses Marsha has been a great support to our team, sharing insight into the inner workings of political campaigns. We're looking forward to seeing the positive impact of these initiatives and continuing our work towards a brighter future. #PositiveChange #SustainableFuture #PurposeLed #UKGeneralElection #MarshaDeCordova #LabourCandidate #Battersea #Election2024 #Vote

The Clayton Chamber of Commerce plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between businesses, residents, and the larger community. Providing a platform for local, state, and national elections is crucial because it fosters an informed citizenry, allowing residents and businesses alike to make knowledgeable choices about their leadership. When people are educated about their candidates, they are more likely to vote, leading to a more representative democracy. Specifically, for the 2023 Candidates for the Town of Clayton Mayor and Town Council, offering a platform ensures that the unique needs and concerns of Clayton are addressed. These candidates, if elected, will directly influence the trajectory of Clayton's economic development, infrastructure, and overall quality of life. Thus, the Chamber's platform aids in ensuring that the town's leadership is in tune with its aspirations and challenges, ultimately creating a thriving and harmonious community.

Democracy isn't just upheld during elections—it's a daily commitment across all levels of government. This insightful article by Neil Saravanamuttoo and Catherine McKenney underscores the critical role of local governments in safeguarding our democratic values. At City Hall, where most Canadians interact directly with government, ensuring accountability and meaningful engagement is paramount. It's here that community trust in democracy is built—or eroded. Municipal leaders play a pivotal role in upholding these norms, influencing how our democracy thrives. As we navigate challenges to democratic values, let's recognize the importance of robust public engagement and accountability at the local level. It's not just about services; it's about fostering a resilient democracy that serves all citizens. 🔗 Read more about how City Halls are on the front line of saving democracy. https://lnkd.in/duQbxnxJ #Democracy #LocalGovernment #PublicEngagement #PublicParticipation #CommunityLeadership #CommunityEngagement #IAP2Canada

Canadians understand how important their local government is - when it works well and when it doesn’t. Because our city halls are closest to communities they serve, they are critical to our health, safety and resilience. It’s time to shift our governance in Canada to put our resources where they matter most to Canadians. So yes, local governments need to get better at engaging citizens in authentic ways but we also need to ensure that our taxes are going to local governments so they can better meet the needs of residents.

Check out my latest column with Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK and The Tennessean where I examine three of the most basic but fundamental local issues plaguing Nashvillians and the scope of responsibility for the mayor’s office. These seemingly simple issues are ones that we oftentimes do not realize their significance until they are neglected.
