GO #BRADLEY COOPER! GO PBS / WETA!
At some point, we’ll all need care, we’ll all have the chance to provide care, and our systems alone are not enough.
Caring for one another does not always come easily in America. Our education and health systems are not set up for it, and even our culture encourages people in need to deal with issues themselves; it’s up to us and usually our immediate family to cope with hard times.
This approach doesn’t work for anyone. We deserve, indeed need, a better way.
I appreciate Pam Henning sharing that production is underway on #Caregiving, a documentary by executive producer #Bradley Cooper. #Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president of public media station WETA, a producer on the project, shared that the film will feature a diverse group of caregivers sharing their personal stories of challenge and triumph and is slated to premiere on PBS in Spring 2025.

As educators, we might ask: How can we create more space and provide more support for care within our school community? How can we best advance the struggle for human dignity?
If you have another couple minutes, consider reading Care: A Love Story about Paul O’Neill:

From the press release: “In the U.S., more than 53 million family caregivers are unpaid, providing 34 billion hours of care annually, amounting to an estimated $67 billion in personal lost earnings. As caregiving in America faces the twin pressures of an aging baby boomer generation and rising life expectancy, the United States' long-term care system threatens to tip into crisis. The film will personalize this urgent national issue through stories from caregivers and interviews with experts as they fight to give caregivers the security and support they provide for so many others.”
For new parents, the return to work can be daunting when it comes to managing both work and caregiving responsibilities. Learn more in the synopsis of From Day One's virtual conference panel discussion, featuring our own Dana Kirwin. These expert panelists spoke with business leaders to discuss how companies can best support caregiving and the impact they see.

This International Women's Day, we dedicate our latest episode to the superheroes among us: the mothers turned full-time caregivers for their medically complex children. Their stories of resilience, love, and the fight for justice illuminate the path toward a more inclusive and supportive society.
Navigating the complex healthcare and government systems to secure a waiver for your child is a feat in itself. However, the real challenge often begins afterwards: accessing the very support you fought so hard to obtain. Despite the funds being earmarked and available, they remain frustratingly out of reach, inadvertently benefiting governmental budgets rather than the children in need. The stark reality is that finding caregivers is a daunting task. The high needs of our children coupled with insufficient compensation dissuade potential caregivers, leaving families without the necessary support. The process to certify a caregiver for our children is fraught with obstacles, sometimes taking up to a year to navigate. This isn't just an oversight; it's a systemic barrier designed to wear us down, expecting us to retreat in defeat. However, this crisis cannot continue unaddressed. Families are enduring undue stress, facing isolation, job loss, and mounting pressures at home.We stand at a critical juncture where action is imperative. It's time to dismantle these barriers and reform a system that has long failed to support the families it was designed to assist. Our children deserve better. Our families deserve better. Together, we must strive for a solution to this crisis, ensuring every child receives the care and support they need.

With my dissertation focusing on senior level employees balancing work-life integration with their caregiving roles outside of work, this topic is front of mind for me. Kudos to Bradley Cooper for taking on the subject of caregiving with his PBS documentary.

Caregiving for a loved one is among the most demanding, challenging, and rewarding human activities. Although children are commonly thought of as the recipients of care – rather than the givers – children all over the world participate actively in caregiving every day. The US does yet not have formal policies or support systems in place for these young people as we do for adult caregivers. Furthermore, schools do not typically identify or provide support for Caregiving Youth, which puts them at risk for academic, social, and emotional challenges. In the UK, the rights of “young carers” are recognized and upheld by national governments, caregiving advocacy groups, health care services, and schools. The United States needs to do the same.

A new article from Jeff Johnson, State Director, AARP Florida highlights Florida's inadequate long term care support infrastructure in terms of access, affordability, provider choice, safety, caregiving support and community integration to address the needs of our rapidly increasing aging population and their family caregivers.
Data from AARP's newly released 2023 Long Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Scorecard notes Florida is woefully behind, ranking at #43 in the country. The study also found Florida is among the worst in the country when it comes to #caregiversupport.
We must do better to prioritize increasing available support and resources for our nearly 3 million family caregivers across the state of Florida who provide over an estimated $40 billion in unpaid care by taking action to address issues such as paid leave, tax credits, and programming designed to support caregiver health and well-being so that they can in turn give good quality care to their loved ones.

What a great article Maggie Ornstein, PhD, MPH, MA!
The implications of this study for public health policies and programs are significant! The authors call for a comprehensive, integrated, and ecological approach to address the needs of family caregivers and care recipients. The study highlights several key implications for public health policies and programs.
1. Integrated Approach: Public health policies and programs should adopt an integrated approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of caregivers, care recipients, and professional care teams. This approach should acknowledge the reciprocal relationships among these stakeholders and consider the impact of caregiving on the health and well-being of all involved parties. Yes, in our Caregiver-Centered Care Health Workforce Education this is about Partnering with family caregivers https://lnkd.in/g_Ci2YWx
2. Support for Caregivers: There is a critical need to enhance support services for family caregivers, including respite care, counseling, and training programs. Public health policies should prioritize the development and expansion of support services to alleviate the emotional, financial, and physical burdens experienced by caregivers. In our Caregiver-Centered Care Education, this is Fostering Family Caregivers' Resilience. https://lnkd.in/gXnNvqiX
3. Healthcare Navigation: Public health programs should focus on improving healthcare navigation for family caregivers, ensuring access to information, resources, and support to effectively manage the healthcare needs of care recipients. In our Caregiver-Centered Care Education, this advocacy is in the Navigating Module https://lnkd.in/eDRNjuwe
4. Financial assistance and workplace supports: Given the financial strain experienced by many family caregivers, public health policies should advocate for workplace supports and financial assistance. In our Caregiver-Centered Care Education, this advocacy is in the Changing the Culture and Context of Care https://lnkd.in/gwUfU23n
5. Youth Caregiver Recognition: Public health policies should recognize and support the unique needs of youth and young adult caregivers. Yes, our Caregiver-Centered Care Health Workforce Education is training health care providers to recognize caregiver diversity and provide person-centered care to family caregivers. https://lnkd.in/ggusEgZE
In summary, the study underscores the need for public health policies and programs to adopt a holistic, inclusive, and responsive approach to support family caregivers and address the complex challenges associated with long-term care.
