Survive and Advance "March Madness", the season-concluding NCAA basketball tournament, is a bit of a niche interest in the UK, but I love it and I think it has a lot of lessons for career changers too. Tenuous ones, but stick with it. It doesn't really matter if you don't know your bracket-busters from your Cinderellas, your Elite Eight from your First Four or the Boilermakers from the Wolfpack. The best lesson in March Madness is to survive and advance. It's called madness for a reason - unknowns become stars, top seeded teams are knocked out, all sorts of unexpected twists. Which is a bit like your job search - a lot of things are out of your control. All you can do is win one game at a time. Get to the next round. Do the best you can with the step in front of you, and worry less about winning it all at once. Make your application, CV, interview answers clear, concise and compelling. Have you noticed that college baseball has continued to grow in popularity and prevalence in the past few decades? I’ve been in the industry for 60 years in some capacity (and a fan for even longer!), so I’ve seen the growth of college baseball since the 1970s and 1980s, especially in warm-weather regions of the nation. Athletic directors, coaches, scouts, and recruiters began to see the potential appeal of the game. With increased revenue, baseball programs enabled their recruiters to pursue potential talent vigorously. More money poured in to upgrade the playing facilities as well as ro support staff and sports promotions. As a result, more top-shelf players became attracted to college, and advancements in television programming and print media coverage began to blossom. ESPN networks have significantly increased television coverage of the NCAA playoffs and the College World Series as well as women’s leagues! Swing, hit or miss. This is just a reminder to never give up. In this picture there are three individuals that took years of training, and schooling to achieve this 20 second moment. All 3 have a passion for baseball. All 3 probably started playing baseball when they were young. All 3 have taken at least 20 years of their lives to get to this point. All 3 narrowed their niche as to how they were going keep their baseball passion alive. Two wanted to be players but figured out where their talents fit best on the field. One went to school for years to get a chance to be a ref for the minor leagues. All 3 want more from their careers. One wants to ref for the major leagues. 2 want to also go up to the major leagues. All 3 will not give up until they make it. All 3 will network, practice and constantly push themselves to achieve their goals. It takes a strong inner drive. It takes being aligned with the right people. It takes a strong belief in yourself. It takes time, which allows us to grow stronger. Remember: Each one is an employee. Start practicing the game of life.

𝗜𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁, 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲? Twenty-five years ago, I walked onto the Missouri S&T baseball field and tried out. A culmination of a lot of hard work, overcoming self-doubt, and defying dire predictions of multiple previous coaches. 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.  Two years later, considering a .192 batting average, two seasons of riding the pine, and a need to invest greater time in study I elected to end my baseball career. 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦. 𝗜𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲? Considering no one else on earth has thought about my baseball career in 25 years, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵. This week I walked on the Missouri S&T baseball field for the first time since walking away from NCAA baseball. My mind was drawn to the accomplishment of making the team and appreciation for those that believed in me and helped me more than any thoughts of failure for not lettering. 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 

⏮️THROWBACK THURSDAY When I made my first career start in the 2013 Chick Fil A Bowl against Duke as a true freshman, I genuinely didn’t find out I’d be starting until right before kick off and to be honest I wasn’t sure if I was ready for the stage in spite of all the prep in the film room and on the practice field leading up to the final game of the season. However, one of my teammates was battling an injury and was unfortunately unable to go when game time arrived. Ready or not, it was time for the biggest opportunity of my football career to that point. In athletics, the “next man up” mentality is a must - both for making sure you are ready when opportunity knocks and making sure your teammates are ready to go when you aren’t available. It wasn’t one of the best defensive performances - we ended up needing a desperate second half comeback to win a 52-48 thriller. But I’ll always vividly remember what was an incredible contest to play a role in. All that long-winded posting for two main takeaways. 1) admittedly, I shamelessly enjoy reliving the glory days from my time at Texas A&M 2) That “next man up” mentality is just as vital in any career as it is in athletics. Going above and beyond to prepare yourself for new opportunities as well as making sure your teammates are prepared for challenges of their own that may arise makes you and your team incredibly adaptable - and that adaptability means your team doesn’t take a step back when you lose a member. #throwbackthursday #12thman #construction

March Madness is officially here! You know what that means. Lots of sports analogies for business. But those are often tiring and overused. So I don't want to talk about that today. Instead, let's talk about the pick and roll. Since 2011, per Second Spectrum, there has been a 33% increase in the number of pick and rolls per 100 possessions in college basketball. This increase has led to 27.5 more points per 100 possessions scored via the pick and roll than pre-2011. Combined with the era of positionless basketball, pick and rolls are executed by any combination of players on the court, not just the traditional big man and point guard. Defenses have had to quickly identify the pick and roll and learn how to adapt to win against it. And according to Basketball Reference, offensive trends emerge every 10-15 years. This means that defenses will have to adapt again to whatever comes next. In business, your competitors constantly come up with new ideas, and new trends emerge in the industry all the time. And just like positionless basketball, all employees need to step up and push the business towards success. Your company must innovate to stay relevant in the marketplace. From 8 years old to 22, I played competitive soccer. What was my position? Goalkeeper (that’s code for “needs counseling”). For the longest time, I wished I was taller and more athletic so I could make super-saves. Saves that make the highlight reel. Eventually, I came to terms with my height and athleticism. That’s when I discovered my competitive advantage: Mastering the fundamentals of my position. The fact is, over the course of a 90-minute game, there aren’t many chances to make highlight reel saves. That’s what makes them stand out; they’re rare. Yet, during that same 90-minutes there are dozens of opportunities to do ordinary things exceptionally well. Ultimately, by mastering the fundamentals, I could outperform my competition…even those who were taller and more athletic than me. It’s the same in business. You can get stuck wishing you were naturally smarter and more talented. Or you can master the fundamentals of your role by performing ordinary things exceptionally well. Only one of these options is in your control.
