On June 26, Grand Peaks hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Mayor Mike Johnston, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Skyline at Highlands multifamily community and the launch of a special collaboration with the Denver Public Schools Foundation. As part of the celebration, Grand Peaks announced that 10 Skyline at Highlands apartments will be donated to DPS teachers, with Grand Peaks providing a one-year, rent-free lease for all 10 teachers! We think that's pretty awesome! https://lnkd.in/gup5vcNF

BC’s affordable housing sector advocates gathered in Courtenay today at the BC Non-Profit Housing Association’s Regional Education, Networking and Tradeshow (RENT) event. BC Green candidate Arzeena Hamir congratulated local groups, including Dawn to Dawn, the Transition Society, Wachiay Friendship Center and L'Arche Comox Valley for their hard work and commitment to providing affordable housing for the community, while repeating her calls for a significant and immediate increase in provincial funding for non-market housing for hard-working residents in the Comox Valley. “The Comox Valley has seen a few affordable housing projects in recent years,” Ms. Hamir stated, “but we need more provincial investment. I hope conference participants will continue to bring forward innovative non-market housing solutions for the broader community, since many residents are impacted by the affordability crisis due to housing costs.” Hard-working families in the Comox Valley have been ignored for decades by every BC governing party. Families can no longer afford rents that eat up most of their paycheques. The BC Greens are the only party advocating for non-market housing for working families.

These kinds of opportunities to build truly affordable housing should be available in every province and territory of Canada. There is a lot of discussion happening nationally right now in housing, but in most provinces there are almost no funds available to build housing like this, and certainly no multi-billion dollar programs aimed at building thousands of non-market units. Not only should every community in Canada have the opportunity to secure funding for non-market housing, but the federal government should be matching funds for programs like this.
The B.C. government has announced that it will fund the construction of 3,500 new rental homes for those with moderate and low incomes, and is inviting non-profit organizations, First Nations, municipalities, and other groups to submit housing proposals to apply for funding through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund (CHF). Proposals will be accepted until mid-November. https://lnkd.in/gtZ9y5Jy

Insight into why it takes years to get affordable housing built in this city.
[Toronto, ON - November 2023] "Community considers Coxwell & Gerrard co-op plans. This was an old strip-strip mall at the corner right by a TTC streetcar. 6-storey building, 33 units of Seniors #AffordableHousing Co-op. Somehow it didn't get rapidly-approved & built -- because it's now been 2,681 days since they sent their original submission in with the first organization, which was Innstead Cooperative Inc in 2016…” - Mark Richardson, volunteer w/ HousingNowTO explains the City Hall obstacle-course many 'not-for-profit' housing projects have to get thru at the City of Toronto...

On Friday 27th October 2023, the first year students of the BSc in Architectural Technology at TU Dublin Bolton St. will build their own shelters and Sleep Out Against Homelessness as part of Focus Ireland’s Shine A Light initiative. By sleeping out, we hope to both raise awareness about homelessness, help raise vital funds to support homeless services, and to instill good learning outcomes relating to building design, performance, and thermal comfort. 9 teams of 7 students are challenged to create a structure that will house their group overnight, maintain 20 degrees Celsius temperature internally, achieve 100 lux daylight levels, and *stay dry* overnight. Crucially, this year there is an emphasis on the structure being deconstructable and materials reusable for next year’s effort; hopefully achieving good learning outcomes about sustainability and a good cause! Please donate if you see value in the cause and the students’ endeavours. https://lnkd.in/eag9yi8x #tudublin #architecture #sustainability #circulareconomy #focusirelandshinealight2023 #focusireland

California's Top Three Housing Bills to Track for 2024! SB 4, allows religious institutions and non-profit colleges to construct housing without having to go through the process of re-zoning. This could potentially help in creating more affordable housing options. SB 423, expands and extends eligibility for SB 35, which is all about streamlined entitlement. This means that more projects may now qualify for this convenient process. AB 1633 addresses the issue of CEQA determination delays for infill projects. It does so by introducing a cause of action and liabilities under the Housing Accountability Act. This step might help in speeding up the process and ensuring smoother progress for such projects. https://lnkd.in/gnTYsDjP
