I was ghosted and I completely lost faith in the brand. Forever. 💔 The past few weeks I've been in the process for two (completely) different scholarships. I won neither (😢) but the way I now view the brands behind the scholarships is massively different. The first one, my chances were high. I was shortlisted as 1 of 8 and hit it off with the decision maker. She even gave me confidential information around the plans for the scholarship. Needless to say - my hopes were monumental. 🤩 The second one was a long shot. Hopes still high (but a tad more realistic) as I would've loved to win. As I won neither - what is the difference in my experience between them? With the latter I got a nice email, stating that I was one of many great candidates, but ultimately not the final choice. As for the first one, I found out through a post on their Instagram that they had chosen someone else. 😒 The latter one had a massive amount of candidates, yet they reached out to every single one. The first one had 8 shortlisted candidates they conducted phone interviews with, but chose to only contact the two who won. Finding out through Instagram left a sour taste to say the least. I used to be a customer of theirs. I won't be in the future. 🙅♀️ As Andreas Johansson at our partner Cygni, part of Accenture put it - everyone we meet is a potential employee, customer, or supplier. As business leaders, we must always remember that the way we treat them will affect if they chose someone else or if they become an ambassador for our brand. 🙌 This is often lost in recruitment processes. Time and time again I've witnessed ghosting (first as well as second hand). Business leaders, most of you need to do better. You might be swamped with candidates, but for the love of God - reach out. Each candidate has set aside time to apply for this position. Put effort and hopes into becoming a part of your team. The bare (f*cking) minimum you can do is to reach out and say 'Thank you for applying. Unfortunately you're not our pick.' I won't disclose what the first brand was. From going to being a super fan of Wonsulting in 2018 to being selected as an ambassador is a blessing. I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Ambassador at Wonsulting! My first project lead at McKinsey & Company shared this networking tip with me: On EVERY SINGLE project.. ▶️ Find one client contact to build a friendship with. ▶️ This person doesn’t need to be someone senior.  ▶️ As long as you enjoy working with this person. Stay in contact.  Message him/her every 3-6 months. Just as you progress in your career, this person will progress as well. He/she may be very senior once you look to exit consulting. Grow this list of contacts as you work on projects. Just 1 at a time. Do this consistently and great opportunities for exits or future client work will arise. You might even become good friends! I don't exactly remember the year in which I got to know about Nitin Paranjpe but I clearly remember it was in one of the videos or interviews of Harsh Bhogle where I stumbled upon the work of Nitin. The impression I had about him was largely the typical FMCG CEO kind of profile and some vague memory of watching some of his interviews on YouTube. After many many years, I found Nitin coming back onto my radar. This time in a totally new avatar. To my surprise, or no, actually, I must say, not so surprisingly I saw him taking over the role of Chief People Officer (what is typically called CHRO). In the last several months I saw Nitin actively sharing his ideas, experiences, and insights on LinkedIn and I am very grateful for him to do that. His rich experience in business and deep insights into people and culture make his content highly valuable. Anyone who is into the world of business and people must follow him without second thoughts. I don't think I can do justice to summarize how useful his generous sharing has been all this while. But let me talk a little bit about the post he shared today. I have to admit that I didn't know about the book #Humanocracy that he mentioned and I already adding it to my to-read list now. I was pondering on how to elevate my LinkedIn presence, and that's when my sister Josephine Eleng recommended I follow Haoma Worgwu. I took her advice and, let me tell you, it's been a game-changer. I hopped on her train 20 days ago, and my progress has been remarkable. 💎 I've made meaningful connections with brilliant minds. 💎 My engagements and impressions have soared to new heights. 💎 Guess what? Who is the decision maker? I want to talk to them. A gentle nudge to seasoned executives who only want to talk to the decision-makers. You know who you are 😊. I implore you to talk to everyone. Consider all of the people who have access to you and influence your decisions… People who are not decision makers have valuable insights and have relationships with the coveted decision makers. Celebrating the opportunity to share, learn and grow together on #LinkedIn I recall creating my account on LinkedIn in 2012 when we first moved to Singapore, and I desperately needed a new professional network. Initially LinkedIn was just a job hunting platform to me. Later in 2016/17, I also started posting on LinkedIn to share my challenges, wins and perspectives on careers and life. My 'why' aka purpose was to provide hope, information, and inspiration to those reading my posts and articles. I loved the reach and responses I were getting from people across the globe. But earlier this year, I found myself a bit lost on LinkedIn. Honestly, I felt I am no more adding value over and above the AI articles, chat GPT, and wonderful new influencers. I thought of quietly resigning from LinkedIn. But I am here to tell you that I am so glad I didn't. Instead, I decided to embrace my unique voice, and figure out how I can do even better on LinkedIn in a 'healthy' way. This led me to invest on LinkedIn- more learning, embracing new trends, but importantly remaining authentic and true to my 'why'. My biggest realisation is that we are here to support each other, and grow together. My messages have only reached out to more and people only because of your support. - You are not my 'followers', you are my 'supporters'. - You are not my 'contacts', you are my 'connections' - You are not just 'commentors', you add so much value through your thought provoking, brilliant perspectives. Yesterday, I had a talk with Godai (Go) Morishige, one of my senpai from Robert Walters. What was supposed to be a quick 20-minute work call turned into a 40-minute-long discussion about work ofcourse, but also about our lives, and our university days. Alumni connections can be invaluable when pursuing a consulting job: ✅ Referrals: Many consulting firms rely on employee referrals when hiring. ✅ Insider Insights: Alumni who currently work in consulting can provide valuable insights into the industry, specific firms, and the recruitment process. ✅ Networking Events: Alumni networks often host events specifically geared toward connecting current students with professionals in the consulting industry.
