Storytelling at UNCC with Accenture - Sharing our Journey Giving back and sharing experiences is important as we often think there is a straight line to success. Accenture colleagues Chloé H., Nick Stoneburg, and Peyton Watson, joined me for a meaningful session at UNCC. We discussed the importance of storytelling, networking, and interviewing while sharing personal career journeys that highlighted resilience and agility. Early in my career, I had no idea how to ask questions in an interview, or effectively communicate the value I bring to a client or employer. Few of us had jobs upon graduation, we typed our resumes on a thing called a typewriter, mailed in applications vs emailed, and frankly just hoped someone would call the home phone.  Many talented individuals face similar difficulties in making connections today, despite their hard work and skills. We celebrate successes but we rarely talk about failures, challenges, resilience and the attitudes to build a successful career. My clients and teammates have made me better, yet despite all the successes, rejection still hurts to this day. For me, it is crucial to be vulnerable and honest, to share real stories of our experiences, both good and bad, so that others know that they are not alone. It was a privilege, along with my colleagues to share our experiences with the next generation. Listening to their questions, reminded me of when I started my career and I am so grateful to be in a position to help our youth find their place in the workforce. To my surprise, I discovered that Tashika Hamilton, a long-time friend, was in the audience. She is now completing her Doctorate in Business Administration at UNCC and wrote her thesis on "Hammer to a Glass Ceiling.". Her own personal journey is truly inspiring and I recall her as a confident young lady who challenged me more than once on various topics. I can’t wait for her to share her story with everyone. I was very impressed with the students in the room, all looking to make their next step, and pleased to see a number of Accenture alumni in the audience. Good luck on your future journeys and remember – Network,  Practice, and be Authentic!
