Newfriars College - Project Search UHNM update! Over at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, our DFN Project SEARCH interns have now settled into their second placements, and are doing a tremendous job. This morning, intern Lewis presented his research project and suggestions on how the hospital trust can improve accessibility for staff and visitors with disabilities. Lewis was able to use his lived experience to suggest some great ideas; he did this with confidence and was not at all phased by presenting to the Director (Lorraine) and Deputy Director (Dave)of Estates, Facilities and PFI, as well as the Senior Nurse for Workforce and Education (Carol) at UHNM. Lewis did a fantastic job and received some amazing feedback such as: "Fantastic presentation, delivered confidently with concise description of the problem and recommendations as to how they can be resolved." "[you] provided a real insightful view of the facilities and challenges they present " "Great presentation, really interesting and informative. Clear and concise!" Lewis also received a Trust Values Award under the 'Improving!' category. This has been an amazing opportunity for Lewis to develop his presentation skills and to gain confidence in speaking in front of an audience. Well Done Lewis! I can say from experience that AAP is a great place to work as a young journalist.
We are proud to announce the launch of the Walkley Opportunity Scholarship with AAP and SBS. Funded by Ampol, the Scholarship has been introduced to address a lack of employment pathways and career opportunities for journalists from socio-economically disadvantaged communities in Australia. Entries are open now for two aspiring journalists to work in Sydney metropolitan newsrooms for 10-week placements. One Scholarship winner will do their placement with AAP, and the other with SBS. Both winners will receive a $10,000 stipend to contribute towards living expenses and accommodation for the duration of the Scholarship. Applications close 12 September. bit.ly/3OZ5I4Z

Building dreams! Lucy is a single mother of 2, who lives in Croydon, South London. While looking after her children, she ended up out of work for 3 or 4 years, and losing confidence in herself. She wanted to work in the construction industry, but despite her qualifications, she wasn't able to break through. That all changed when Lucy joined Successful Mums Career Academy for their Back to Work and Confidence Course, where she was also assigned Dee as a career coach. Working with Dee, she was able to focus on her goal of getting back to work, building her confidence, and finding a job that she loved! Working with Dee, Lucy was able to secure a placement with Real Places Ltd, where she gained insights into working in construction by attending meetings, being introduced to clients, managers and assistant managers, and witnessing the development of projects. After her placement, Lucy was interviewed for a graduate role by Real Places, where she managed to beat out over 400 other applicants to secure the role. She is due to start on September 4th, and we're all excited to see how she gets on. Lucy left us with this message: 'I really want women to take inspiration from my story and not give up. We are not just mums, we are people with dreams and who want to achieve success in life, and we can. You just need to believe in yourself' #TwinGroup #3SC #ParentalEmploymentProgramme #Construction #Employability

According to the National Institutes of Health, "School-based programs are positively associated with stable employment and full-time work while work-based programs most consistently increase the likelihood that youth with disabilities will be employed in jobs that provide fringe benefits. Analyses also indicate that – once individuals with disabilities are stably employed – they can be employed in “good” jobs that provide employee benefits." The Transition Academy put this research into action by partnering with Diversity Placement Services and Central High School to provide summer jobs for students at Central High School, Hogan Preparatory Academy and the Kauffman School. For 71% of the hard working youth, it was their first job. We look forward to building upon this pilot program and ensuring students get real world experience to prepare them for employment success. #specialeducation #disabilityemployment #realworldlearning #careerpathways
Congrats to TTA student Raynell for completing his last day of his summer job program today. He and several other Diversity Placement Services youth had a great summer working at Central High getting the school ready for students in a few more weeks. Research shows youth who have a summer work experience are more likely to succeed after graduating high school. We're so happy to have a role in helping students succeed in life. #DisabilityEmployment #DisabilityInclusion
