A weekend of memory and where May sneaks a preview of summer ... Memorial Day weekend marks a time of reflection and tribute of those who served and passed in serving their country, during peace or war. And it is also the unofficial start to summer, being a popular time to travel, socialize, and engage in recreation. There will be parades, cookouts, solemn observances, commemorations, a whole host of feelings and activities. The ideals, freedoms, and security fought for and supported by those who have died and are honored this day, take shape in different ways, and perhaps one is how we get to live life and enjoy inalienable rights, as imperfect as the social process may be at times. Today we caught up with Jonah Beyer, President of Feed the Need Missions at Stray Gathering Cowboy Church in Muldoon, TX to have him explain what this event was all about. Here's what he had to say: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF FEED THE NEED MISSION'S EVENT, CHURCH & BURGERS? "I would say to connect the church. We need churches to partner with us because we don't have a local church, and so we want to unite the local churches together to serve in the community. And we're a platform. Feed the Need’s weekly site locations are a platform where we get to engage the community. But we need believers to engage that community. So, Church & Burgers is a way to spread the word about the mission and what we're doing with that platform to reach people physically and spiritually." WHAT DOES THE FEED THE NEED TEAM DO FOR THE EVENT? WHAT ALL IS INVOLVED? "We come to your church and we set up a site like what we do every week and we"ll cook for your church. In addition to cooking for you, we also participate in the service. Whether it's preaching the whole sermon or just doing a little promo—we’ll do whatever fits the church's style of Sunday morning. After church, we want to share in community with the church body, and that means sitting down and sharing a meal with you. By serving your church burgers and hot dogs and getting to know your people." HOW CAN A CHURCH GO ABOUT GETTING A CHURCH & BURGERS EVENT GOING IN THEIR COMMUNITY? MEMORIAL DAY “Freedom Is Not Free” Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Some people wear a red poppy in remembrance of those fallen in war—a tradition that began with a World War I poem. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because Memorial Day weekend—the long weekend comprising the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself—unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

As we conclude our Memorial Day celebrations, I hope everyone took the time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Though often seen as the start of summer, Memorial Day carries a deeper meaning that we should hold close. First and foremost, it is a day of remembrance. It's a significant opportunity for us to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Whether you have family members who served or simply want to show your appreciation, taking a moment of silence or visiting a local memorial can be a powerful way to honor their legacy. Our freedoms are safeguarded by the selflessness of these heroes, and we must always remember that. Gratitude is another key aspect of Memorial Day. It’s crucial to show our appreciation not only to those who have lost their lives but also to the families they left behind. These families carry a heavy burden, and it's up to us to support them and demonstrate that their loved ones' sacrifices were not in vain. Sending heartfelt messages, attending Memorial Day parades, or volunteering with organizations that support veterans and their families are just a few ways to express our gratitude. Finally, Memorial Day is about community. It’s a time for us to come together, reflect, celebrate, and support each other. Hosting or attending a gathering, barbecue, or even a small get-together can strengthen our bonds and provide opportunities to share stories and memories. Even small gestures like flying the American flag or wearing red, white, and blue can foster a sense of unity and patriotism. In conclusion, while Memorial Day may often be seen as a long weekend or a chance to fire up the grill, let's not overlook its profound significance. Remembrance, gratitude, and community are the pillars that uphold the true spirit of this day.
