Hello there, It's another time to talk about Product through football events. Sometimes, as a product manager, one of your greatest abilities is knowing when to stop. Yes, you heard me right. I mean knowing when to QUIT. Someone is asking why consider quitting. Here is your answer. You are not made for everyone or every company. Very recently, I wondered why a high-profile coach like Erik Ten Hag (ETH) is struggling in a top club like Manchester United, considering his success in his previous club Ajax. The issue might not be the coach but other factors that are beyond his pay grade because top managers like him have been shown the door in the last couple of years after Sir Alex's era. Relating this to Product space, as a PM you could find yourself in a similar position. What do you do in this scenario? * First, re-assess your skill level if you have the requisite ability the company needs just to be double sure you are not the problem. * Secondly, ask for advice from senior colleagues or someone with experience in such a situation. * Speak to the management about what you think and what you have decided. If these formulas fail, then you have to make a big call. You have to QUIT before you are shown the door by the company. If this is helpful to you, please react. 🏅 A Decade of Dedication in the World of PE and Sports Equipment for Schools 🏅 As I reflect on my journey in the PE and sports equipment industry, I'm excited to share my story with all of you. Over the past decade, I've been on an incredible adventure, from humble beginnings to where I am today. 🔹 Starting from Scratch: It all began when I joined the industry at one firm as a "temporary" staff member. Little did I know that this was the start of something truly special. My passion for delivering top-notch solutions caught the eye of the MD at the time, and I was offered a permanent role. 🔹 Climbing the Ladder: From there, I transitioned from customer service to a sales role, and I didn't stop there. With hard work and determination, I set and achieved ambitious targets, taking on more responsibilities along the way. 🔹 A Short Sabbatical: Life took an interesting turn, and I decided to take a short sabbatical from the industry. But the passion for what I do and the desire to make a difference never truly left me. I still worked on finding solutions for schools, just in a different way. I met some fantastic people in those 6 months, and learned a lot 🔹 Rediscovering My Passion: I soon found myself back in the industry, working for a UK-owned firm. This was never the plan, but with my extensive experience and newfound energy, I'm more enthusiastic than ever about finding innovative solutions for my clients. My journey has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm grateful for the opportunities, the lessons, and the people who have supported me throughout. Today, my focus is clear: I'm here to provide schools in the UK with the best PE and sports equipment solutions. Another opportunity to speak to an AD yesterday. I don't take these opportunities lightly, they always produce gems 💎 Some takeaways: On rising through the ranks/getting to the role you want: Your focus should be on the journey and on getting better each and every day. Don't try to time out when you want to be an AD or when you want to be in a certain spot. At the same time, start thinking like you would if you were in your dream role. If I were X, how would I handle this situation? What would be my decision if I were presented with this problem? Start establishing your values and decision-making now, so that it's second nature when you get to that role. On hiring coaches: Start making a list right now. If you're impressed by a coach, make a note. You need to have these folks on your radar. Once the coaching search starts, it's too late to start thinking about this. On what background you need to be an AD: Focus on what you like and what you are good at (compliance, development, operations, etc.) and make that shine. The rest can be filled in if you are the best in the area you really jive with. And don't forget to use the resources available to you at your current stop. On getting better: You have to have intentionality to get better. Always be innovating, getting better, finding improvement. For example, look at a process that takes 30 days and say, "How can I make it a 29 day process?" That's the mentality you need to bring to your work. On motivation and purpose: You've got to find your "just cause" (or what most people call their "why.") Establish this and specifically write it down. We all have it inside somewhere, but you need to write it out and identify it so it can guide all that you do. That's probably step one before anything else. Beating teams like Man Utd + keeping a clean sheet at the Etihad to retain Premier League status 🚀 I have some INCREDIBLE memories from working in football, but… In 2020, my VALUES changed. I’ve always wanted to help people, but I no longer wanted to help footballers get that 0.5% better. I wanted to have a BIG, positive impact on peoples’ lives. So what is the point with all of this? 🚨 What you VALUE matters more than what you DO. 🚨 → If you value family time, walking with them is better than hitting the gym solo → If you value social time, a lifestyle that allows it is better than being restrictive Build your lifestyle around what you value first, before adding in things you ‘should’ do. Learning to adapt to your surrounding and working with new people is the essence to being successful in your chosen career. One of the best ways to learn how to do this is to attend sports tryouts. These tryouts require you to work with new people and play against players you have never played against before. This helps you grow as a team player and develop a team player mindset. Going to sports tryouts such as soccer tryouts builds your confidence within yourself to be outgoing and forming team bonds with new players. Some of the elements that are required when going to sports tryouts are, team building, communication, adaptiveness, skills. These are all fantastic skills that are required when starting a new job.
