“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. Last Saturday we led a workshop at the second 'Building Relations' event at RWTH Aachen University. Organized by BA and MA students from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, it aims to bridge students and professionals in architecture and planning offices. In our workshop, titled 'Understanding and shaping the mobility transition', students could further develop initial spatial ideas. For example, what can commuting to work by bike, train, bus, etc. look like so that a mobility transition can work and what are the main challenges? Which strategies and measures help to make motorized transport fit for the future and influence user behaviour? Beyond engaging discussions, students also did practical work and sketching. From a hypothetical starting point, areas were uncovered, green spaces and lively squares created, cycle paths planned and new mobility options created. We also discussed the future changes to the profession of architects and urban planners. Will we remain generalists or become specialists? It was great to see strong engagement and positive feedback on the workshop. The mobility transition is an important topic and if we recognize as well as solve these challenges together, we can find ideas that ultimately make implementation possible. Therefore, an exchange with the next generation of architects and urban planners is all the more important, since they will soon play a decisive role in shaping the future. Was thrilled to listen to Prof. Robert Nicholls; an alumnus of University of Liverpool School of Architecture earlier on his life journey as an architect, planner and entertainer. In 2023, he set up an endowment with the university to finance students under travel and support grants each year. So I guess people got curious- how can he afford this by just being an architect? Yes, you are right. He didn't get rich by practising as an architect alone, he has other incomes like investments, real estate etc. Truth is, I think most architects that I know of genuinely like practising architecture on the basis of their deep interest in the field. The certain self-actualisation it brings through the process really harnesses the passion to create changes for the better. If so then, how can there be bad designs or bad choices in shaping the built environment? Architects lost of identity? Self-ego? Greed? Robert also mentioned that he always stand with this one simple principle when designing :"I do no harm". Such a simple yet empathetic approach of creating spaces that should be compatible to the environme nt and culture. The next time you want to design something keep this in mind. I do no harm. The lecture is part of a series to celebrate the school's RIBA 100 years of Validation. Did you know that University of Liverpool is the first RIBA accredited institution in the UK? #100yearsvalidation #RIBA #sotauol #architecture

ARCHITECT CHIRAG DEEP SINGH Architect | Interior Designer | 3D Artist | Interior Designer | Artificial Intelligence Artist | 3D Artist | Design Enthusiast | Worked Under :- Architect Hafeez Contractor
Published Research Paper:- I am thrilled to share the intriguing findings of my extensive research on the captivating subject of Nazi architecture. As a student, I embarked on a journey to delve into the historical and architectural aspects of this complex topic. My research centered around the monumental structures that emerged during the Third Reich, leaving an indelible mark on German cities. From the awe-inspiring Nazi Party Rally Grounds to the imposing Congress Hall, these buildings served as powerful symbols of the regime's ideology and aspirations. Beyond the physical structures themselves, I examined the sociopolitical context that shaped the architectural landscape of the time. By understanding the motivations, societal impact, and ethical implications of Nazi architecture, we can gain valuable insights into the power of design and its influence on society. While confronting the dark history of the Nazi era, it is crucial to approach this subject with sensitivity, condemning the abhorrent ideology that fueled its existence. By studying Nazi architecture, we are reminded of the importance of preserving historical memory and working towards a future that upholds human rights, inclusivity, and social progress. #NaziArchitecture #HistoricalInsights #PowerOfDesign #PreservingMemory #InclusivityAndSocialProgress #ArchitectureForPositiveChange

Interesting upcoming conference: The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Intersections Research Conference: MATERIAL ECONOMIES. R. Buckminster Fuller famously re-conceptualized the idea of material economy by asking “How much does your building weigh?” Nearly one hundred years later, our notion of material sustainability and the “weight” of building materials has taken on a more expansive meaning. Our current understanding of materiality suggests serious challenges related to the sustainability, resiliency, and human health impacts of our architectural materials. The 2023 ACSA/AIA Intersections Research Conference seeks to find what roles architects, designers, and researchers can play in the paradigm shifts necessary to practice with radical material responsibility. The conference will take place October 19–21, 2023 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. https://lnkd.in/dGBVCGu3
