The trend toward investor-backed law firms is gaining momentum outside the United States. Australian company IPH Limited recently acquired the Canadian intellectual property law firm Ridout & Maybee LLP. IPH plans to merge Ridout & Maybee with Smart & Biggar, the largest Canadian IP firm that was purchased in late 2022. Some U.S. states are also experimenting with alternative law firm ownership models that could restructure the legal market. Utah and Arizona have been leaders in allowing non-lawyer investment in law firms. If proven successful, these new ownership structures could spread to other states. Or, in the nationwide patent law market, could serve as registration centers much like Delaware does for corporate law. The rise of generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT could accelerate changes in the legal field. If #GenAI is able to deliver high-quality legal work, it could enable new models that disrupt the traditional law firm structure and open the door to a more complete restructuring. However, many regulatory hurdles remain regarding the unauthorized practice of law and ethics rules around AI. I expect the next 5-10 years will be transformative for the legal industry, including for those of us in the patent and intellectual property law fields. Investor-backed law firms, AI adoption, and regulatory reform could fundamentally reshape law practice - from the largest global firms to solo practitioners. https://lnkd.in/gSK98-et

For all you lawyers (and non-lawyers) out there, this is definitely an interesting trend to watch. I can see potential benefits to experimenting with alternative ownership structures and certainly there are good uses cases for LLMs for transactional lawyers.
