Wowwowwow! Apple raises the bar on #sustainability reporting – and more importantly meeting sustainability goals overall....   We were surprised in 2011, when participants named Apple as the top good corporate citizen in our trend research. In a completely open-ended question (that included a technical definition of #corporatecitizenship), more than 2200 brands were named by people in the US and UK.   At the time Apple was having some challenges with supply chain integrity and the brand was receiving a lot of negative press. The reasons people gave for choosing Apple all were rooted in a ME form of corporate citizenship…. Not a WE orientation. “…create[s] inventive products to make life easier.” “…technology for today and the future, which makes communicating easier worldwide.” “…has brought us joy, by bringing me music 24/7.” 12 years later. Apple is telling a very different story and after watching their status report to “Mother Nature,” I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they were named the number one good corporate citizen today. A few thoughts on celebrating 9 years at Apple.

This is my last week at Apple. It's weird to think that I'm leaving on my own terms only a year and a half in when I spent so long trying to get here. I was so excited for the opportunity to not just work for my dream company, but also on my dream team. It took me about 9 months to realize that what I had spent so long dreaming of wasn't the right fit for me. I always thought that I was a go-getter workaholic, devoted to my job and willing to go the extra mile. Apple is a whole other level that I just wasn't happy keeping up with. That realization was a gut punch. I had to reassess the goals of my entire career. I had achieved what I had set out to do and now I needed to figure out the giant existential question we all have to answer at some point, "What next?" That's not to say that my time at Apple was without benefits. I know that I've gone through major growth. Here are some of my best takeaways. 💪 Stand Firm Apple taught me to put my foot down and speak up when processes aren't being followed or timelines aren't staying on track. If a deadline is at risk, I no longer hesitate to (tactfully) raise the flag and make sure that it gets addressed even if it means some feathers get ruffled. 🚫 Say No Is someone reaching out over the weekend for non-vital information or activities? It can wait until Monday. Is someone asking me to do something that's outside of my scope? Point them in the direction of the right person. Is someone trying to book a meeting when I'm not available? Decline and ask to reschedule if I'm needed. My time and resources are valuable and I need to protect them if I'm going to be effective at my job. 🏅 Be Confident I work for freaking Apple. I earned my seat at this table and I deserve to be here. I was brought onto the team because I have the knowledge and expertise to be able to make valuable contributions and my thoughts and ideas are worth hearing. 👥 Build Relationships I can have truly painful social anxiety. Thanks to the lovely, friendly people on my team I learned to come out of my shell and be a more accessible and outgoing person which helped me to be more approachable and a better collaborator. 🧠 Reflect When I realized Apple wasn't where I belonged, I had to really think about what I actually wanted for myself. I want balance. I don't want to be in meetings from 7AM - 6PM and still have messages to answer late into the night and over the weekend. I want to feel good about what I'm working on, not just producing something new and shiny that people are excited to buy. I want to work with people who share my values and want to make a positive impact on the world as much as I do. My next adventure is so exciting and I can't wait to share it with everyone. But for now I'm looking forward to 2 weeks of rest and relaxation before we get that party started. #newjob #creativeoperations #growth
