The number of people with disabilities grew exponentially during and after COVID. 1 in 4 adults in the US have some type of disability. Approximately 54 million people. It's great to see dedication with the amazing people I've met working collaboratively and compassionately in the field of supporting individuals with disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. The emphasis on teamwork, shared goals, and a collective passion for providing the best care, choices and opportunities for participants is truly commendable afterall we are not here to compete. By fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment where everyone's unique skills and perspectives are valued, you can create a more effective and inclusive support system for those in need. Remember, when each team member brings their strengths to the table, encourages, supports and works together towards a common purpose and goal the outcomes for participants can be truly transformative, amazing and life changing. This message serves as a powerful reminder that in this field, the focus should always be on the well-being and quality of life of the individuals you serve. By working together, supporting each other, and keeping the participants' best interests at heart, you can make a meaningful difference in their lives and help remove barriers to their future success and happiness. Keep up the excellent work, and continue to collaborate and support one another in your vital roles, By opening doors to Opportunities not one of us is here to replace anyone's role ! So, apparently it's #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek. I don't want to add any negativity, but while I appreciate the focus on celebrating the spectrum of neurodiversity, it's essential to acknowledge some underlying challenges. You often see people describing neurodiversity as a 'superpower' and I applaud those who can see it that way. However, due to the lack of support available, many of us face hurdles in a society that lacks adequate support. We're often only valued if our strengths contribute to profit, leaving us overlooked if we don't fit that mold. Of course, this issue extends beyond the neurodiverse community; in a profit-driven society, all workers can feel reduced to mere profit statistics. However, I find that those in the community are more easily discarded when we fail to adapt to an 'adequate' standard. In my recent job, I was fortunate to receive support and understanding from my employer, yet despite their best efforts, it wasn't enough, ultimately leading to my decision to leave. It's not just employer support we, in the community, require, but also assistance from the healthcare system. A diagnosis alone isn't sufficient; how can I determine the accommodations I need when I'm unaware of available resources or what would best help me? So, let's continue celebrating the richness of neurodiversity while also recognizing the need to shift away from a solely capitalist perspective on productivity.
