Polish VC Radix Ventures raised $25 million out of their $60 million target Warsaw-based #Radix Ventures announces its new #VC fund. With an anchor investment of €25 million from the European Investment Fund (EIF), Radix aims to raise a total of €60 million to support the region's deeptech startups and spinouts. This move is significant as CEE has been known for its strong tech talent but has lacked substantial deeptech innovation and funding. Radix is led by three general partners: Pawel Bochniarz, Wojciech Ratymirski, and Michał Urbanowski. Their experience includes managing the smaller Polish seed fund ValueTech and establishing the Polish chapter of the MIT Enterprise Forum. These backgrounds equip them with the expertise to assess and support research-based companies, a skill set that is currently underrepresented among regional VCs who primarily focus on B2B SaaS and digital sectors. The fund will target late seed to Series B rounds, with plans to back 16 startups and reserve half of the capital for follow-on investments. Radix is open to co-investing with other VCs and also leading funding rounds. Investment tickets will range from €1.5 million to €9 million, depending on the stage of the company. The focus will be on software, hardware, and materials deeptech startups from CEE, with a particular interest in technologies that can transform traditional economic sectors to meet climate goals in areas such as energy, industry, transport, and mobility. Radix has established venture partners in Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine, ensuring a broad reach across the region. The fund aims to agree on a €40 million first close this autumn, with the final close expected within a year. Besides the EIF, Radix plans to raise the remaining funds from funds-of-funds and private investors, including individuals and corporates. The article on #Sifted in the first comment. 🇫🇮 In a landmark move for the Finnish startup ecosystem, Innovestor and Business Finland Venture Capital have launched a pioneering €30 million co-investment fund. This initiative marks a significant step in promoting early-stage investments in Finland, particularly in the realm of sustainable innovations, deep tech, and research-based projects. The fund, managed by Innovestor, offers a unique opportunity for angel investors to engage in collaborative investments, enhancing the size and speed of funding for selected startups. Investments range from €50,000 to €300,000, with angel investors forming groups to propose investments to the fund. This collaborative approach accelerates funding opportunities for startups but, and at the same time that represents a shift in the traditional investment landscape, where angel investors typically operated independently. Wilhelm Lindholm, CEO of Innovestor, highlights the timely nature of this venture, especially in the current market climate where there is a high demand for financing. The fund is expected to invest in around a hundred seed-stage companies in #Finland, with a focus on those contributing to green transition and sustainable development. This initiative is a result of efforts led by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland to bolster the startup and growth company sector. Innovestor's expertise in early-stage investments and deep understanding of the needs of startups, particularly those based on research, plays a pivotal role in the success of this co-investment fund. The introduction of this co-investment fund is a game-changer for Finland's venture capital market. It not only diversifies early-stage capital financing but also enhances the international competitiveness of Finnish startups, offering a new dimension to the Nordic investment ecosystem. #FinnishStartups #Innovestor #BusinessFinlandVC #CoInvestmentFund #VentureCapital #StartupFinancing #AngelInvestors #SustainableInnovation #DeepTech #ResearchBasedStartups #GreenTransition #NordicEcosystem #EarlyStageInvestment #StartupGrowth #EconomicDevelopmentFinland

What an investment cycle! 🚀 Vitosha Venture Partners, being co-financed by the European Structural and Investment Funds, has backed multiple companies developing hardware-software solutions. Not Boring calls these businesses “hard tech”, because “they put a strong emphasis on the frontiers of bits and atoms – web3, #AI, #ML, and security on one side, climate, #energy, space, defense, healthcare and bio, on the other.” They’re hard. They don’t have playbooks. They require speculative financial capital to make innovating in atoms as possible as innovating in bits. Vitosha Venture Partners & Shelly Group have understood the assignment. Shoutout to The Recursive for continuously including AIoTCloud in their articles and supporting the startup ecosystem. 📢

I share my knowledge and experience as ex-partner of three VC and PE-growth funds, as well as a startup fundraising advisor (between 2021-2022 i was closing on average one round per month).
VC investments in Poland in Q1 2024: 43M eur (173M pln) PFR Ventures, together with Inovo.vc, published report ‘Polish VC Market Outlook Q1 2024) https://lnkd.in/d9iXe927; to summarize: 👉 30 Polish startups received funding 👉 43M eur value of investments 👉 35 funds involved The Polish startup ecosystem in Q1 2024: 👉 decreased by 76% YoY in the number of transactions 👉 decreased by 55% YoY in capital invested (for comparison, global VC activity in value has decreased by 5% YoY according to Dealroom) We have to say it: numbers are as bad as expected, and we should expect the rest of 2024 to be as challenging. Why is VC activity in Poland decreasing even more rapidly than globally? The Polish startup ecosystem vastly depends on public funding. In 2023, 72% of the transactions in Poland were financed by VCs with Polish public LPs (PFR Ventures, NCBR Bridge Alfa, and BGK), whose investment period just ended or will end in 2023; for comparison, in 2022, VCs with public funding participated in 83% of all transactions. By the end of 2023, the number of active Polish VC funds had decreased by over 80% from its peak in 2022 (about 100 Polish VCs with public funding had to end their investment period), and most teams/GPs won't be able to raise a new fund without the support of Polish public LPs. It shows how important public funds still are for the Polish start-up ecosystem (especially at the pre-seed and seed stage) and that we should expect much lower VC activity (especially in the number of transactions) in the near future (2024 and 2025), that is until new funding from PFR Ventures and NCBR will become available. ___________________________________ Did you like this post?
