Guinea’s new constitution: a platform for political stability? After the 2021 coup that ended Alpha Condé’s controversial third term as president, a key part of #Guinea’s transition to democratic civilian rule is agreeing on a new constitution. Although the June deadline for adopting the draft constitution was missed, there’s still reason for optimism argues Issaka K Souaré in ISS Today. Consultations across the country on the constitution delivered promising submissions, including on limiting presidential powers and capping their time in office at two five-year terms. Of course, the real test is still to come – whether post-transition leaders abide by the new constitution and its provisions. https://ow.ly/wKKm50PVZq9

My analysis of recent developments in Kuwait, including the suspension of the National Assembly, seven articles of the Constitution, and the appointment of a new Crown Prince. 'Emir Mishal’s suspension of the National Assembly last month thus may be seen as an ending of the post-Gulf War political settlement in Kuwait, a moment that has been met with barely a flicker of recognition in the United States and with muted reactions in the other Gulf states as well as in Kuwait itself.' https://lnkd.in/g_49M-gM

A strong parliament forms the foundation of democracy, and the decisions made by supreme legislative authority affect the lives of each of us. That is why it is important to learn more about the work of this institution, to study the mechanisms and practices of parliaments, and to follow the initiatives of parliamentarians. That is why the Agency for Legislative Initiatives has been studying various aspects of parliamentary activity for over 20 years, developing specialised recommendations, and assisting in everything that develops the Ukrainian Parliament and strengthens its capacity. Therefore, today, on the International Day of Parliamentarism, we offer a small selection of materials by the ALI dedicated to the issues of Ukrainian parliamentarism, its current challenges, and problems: ✅ Military Parliamentarianism: How Parliamentarians Worked out under a Common Threat: https://cutt.ly/UedzPuNR ✅ 3 priorities of parliamentary reform in Ukraine: https://cutt.ly/AedzO6Xw ✅ A Closed Conciliation Board or a Public Talk Show: What Is More Important for Ukrainian Democracy? https://cutt.ly/hedzOLsg ✅ Code of Conduct for MPs: easy to violate, difficult to adopt, impossible to agree on: https://cutt.ly/cedzOSzj ✅ The role and the functions of the parliamentary committees and factions: https://cutt.ly/bedzOTA7 ℹ️ The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated annually on June 30, the day of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, an international organization of parliaments of sovereign states created in 1889. It was officially established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution. #InternationalDayofParliamentarism #UkrainianParliament #ALI #parliamentarism

Fancy some Friday post-work reading? Something to read over your Saturday morning coffee? Welcome to #DiveIntoTheArchive where we share articles and analysis from our writers which you may have missed! We are delighted to share this engaging policy paper from John McStravick: "Protecting and promoting partnership: an EU-UK joint parliamentary assembly" in which John examines how might the UK and EU maintain strong diplomatic and political relations in a post-Brexit world. John's analysis suggested the establishment of an EU-UK joint parliamentary assembly. Specific recommendations for a joint parliamentary assembly – including its remit, membership, format, and establishment – are made, informed by an assessment of working precedents as well as interviews with parliamentarians. "...although it is ultimately for members of the two parliaments to decide amongst themselves how to engage with one another, it is essential that the UK government and leaders of the European institutions offer their unmitigated support for any such initiative, without delay, in the interests of all." Interesting read on the roles of EU institutions. It's important to know how our elected representatives work for us!
From 6-9 June, European citizens chose their representatives to sit in the European Parliament, the only EU institution directly elected by European citizens. Next, EU countries will nominate a candidate for the President of the Commission. Read more about what EU institutions do: https://lnkd.in/e6dZMw3N
