Today marks the first day of Ramadhan! ☺️ Anyone who has worked with me for long would know that Ramadhan is my favourite time of the year and I wait every year for this month to arrive.
I get asked annually why I fast from food and water (yes, even water, it surprises someone yearly 😂) and the reasons that resonate best with me are:
1. It teaches me gratitude and humbles me with the privilege and easy access I have to food and clean drinking water in a developed country
2. It teaches me discipline - if I can abstain from something that is good and beneficial for me, what’s stopping me from abstaining from something that is bad?
3. It renews my sense of purpose, love, and worship for Allah - this whole month, Muslims are encouraged to pray more and do more good deeds, and it’s an amazing reminder for me of my own faith and journey towards becoming a better person
If you have a Muslim / Muslims in your workforce, some ways you could support them are:
1. Be mindful of this month
2. Understand that our sleeping and / or working times may shift to accommodate our fasting from sunrise to sunset, so best to see what works for each of us
3. Don’t feel bad if you accidentally invite us out for lunch or coffee, we know it’s not on purpose!
4. And with Easter this year falling just short of a week before Eid, which is the celebration we have at the end of Ramadhan, consider flexible leave arrangements to allow us to swap Easter for Eid days in alignment with our faith
Hope you learned something in this post! Happy to answer your questions if you had any 😊
Ramadhan Mubarak to all of my fellow Muslims and a happy month to all! 🌙
