Medicare's flagship accountable care organization program is the Medicare Shared Savings Program, which logged $1.8 billion in savings to the Medicare program in the last plan year alone. While not directly a CMMI program, Medicare’s ACO program wouldn’t exist without work that predated it, including the Pioneer ACO program and the work around BPCI and CJR. We've learned, grown, and improved based on every tested model. That's critical to remember, even if we cannot put a dollar amount on the experience.

4 to scale out of 50 is 8% success rate at bringing to scale. That’s far better than what we see in terms of scale to the size the 4 programs that did expand had to prove. We usually only see a unicorn in the non .gov HC space 1 in 100 or even higher than that maybe. The old saying - you have to break a few eggs before you make an omelet! We need CMMI to keep driving new and exciting things. I for one think Adam Boehler and Patrick Conway both did excellent work bringing forth innovative models and test! We need MORE innovation not less :)
