Helping law firm owners grow wildly profitable firms | Trial lawyer & Founder of The Mike Morse Law Firm | Over $1.5B recovered for our clients | Keynote Speaker | Best-Selling Author | CEO of FIREPROOF
I got fired 3 years into my career. No warning. No performance plan. My bosses told me nothing. I made a pledge to myself that day in 1995— If I was ever lucky enough to have employees, I would treat them better. Today, I'm lucky to say that our team is more than 200 people strong. And almost 30 years later, I've tried my best to stay true to that pledge. Here are 11 examples of what that looks like at our firm: 1. We pay better than most. 2. We offer generous time off from day 1 with the firm. 3. We trust our people to be adults and have seen great results with work-from-home and hybrid setups. 4. We encourage pro bono work (and give you the time to actually do it). 5. We participate in lots of community events. 6. We want everyone to have a good sense of how the firm is doing financially. 7. We want every team member to know where they stand individually. 8. We want everybody working in their sweet spot, the point where the things you're great at overlap with the things you enjoy doing. 9. We have clear org structures. Everyone knows who does what and who reports to who. No committees. No messy partnership BS. 10. Our core values are aren't just window dressing. They're talked about routinely so everyone knows what is important to the firm and to me. 11. We also have a good time (this photo is a bunch of our lawyers from a party at my house last year). My goal is that once a lawyer joins our firm, they never want to look for another job. If you're looking for your next opportunity, feel free to dm me here about the Mike Morse Law Firm. We have 10 offices throughout the state, are growing, and are looking to add more great lawyers. I believe that people deserve a great place to work. Yes, even lawyers. Don't you agree?
This is exemplary, Mike Morse. Thanks for sharing your approach to building a great team. I love learning from these examples. Have you faced any challenges in maintaining these values as your firm has grown?
That sounds like a law firm with a lot of upsides. I love the transparency here, Mike. Thanks for sharing it.
Yes! Even lawyers deserve a great place to work. I appreciate that emphasis on service and pro bono work. That's something my wife Eliese Chubb and I wanted to instill in our firm from the beginning 3 years ago.
That line about the core values sort of sneaks on here. Something tells me that one has had a big impact on just about everything else on this list.
'We want everybody working in their sweet spot, the point where the things you're great at overlap with the things you enjoy doing'. <-- this is SO GOOD. Love this way of looking at it.
I wish more companies were like this
Mike Morse getting fired (when viewed through the right lens) is often a powerful motivator and a stepping stone to bigger and better things. After all: (F)inding (I)nspiration (R)equires (E)xperiencing (D)ifficulties
Core values drive everything 🙌 It definitely shows that your values are integrated into your work. Way to go
Sometimes getting fired is the best thing that can happen to you just proved it

5dRead your book and it’s been a game changer for how I’m running our firm. We quickly established our core values and our firm identity. Attracting great talent and keeping them is one of the challenges we currently face as we grow. Thank you for sharing your examples and firm values and culture. I was not fired, instead was never hired by anyone…so I had to create opportunity for myself by starting the firm.
