My first column is out at the Washington Post. I was able to explore all the ways we're still using our appliances like it's 1970, and how there's a better way. You'll be happy/angry to know (depending now where you fall on this divide) that your thermostat is smarter than you and pre-rinsing dishes is unnecessary and shockingly wasteful. Best of all, I got to let my dad know that after all those years of telling me to turn off the lights (I'm sorry!), the era of LEDs has come to my rescue. Lighting is now hardly a rounding error in the home energy budget. https://lnkd.in/g6QqnrDE Feel free to sign up to my Post newsletter here. Thrilled to see your byline in my wapo newsletter today — congratulations!
Love this Michael J. Coren!! Signing up for the newsletter now and cheering you on.
I don't pre-rinse my dishes. Never have. But, while I know that turning off -our- lights won't make any difference in -our- household budget, what happens if millions of households turned off their lights? Is there any data on whether this saves much energy?
Though it’s still good practice to turn off the lights when you leave a room!
made me a subscriber, too. Congratulations! Now if those appliances could just tell people in real time what their electricity actually costs. The key in a renewable power economy will be to reduce demand at those all-important "shoulders (generally 7-9am & 5-7pm)
Grady was literally just daydreaming to me about a battery in our soon to be purchased induction stove....nice work!
Hi Michael, interesting and informative. I do have one question on laundry - do you know if the hot cycles are better at sanitizing clothes? Thanks!
Great read! I learned a few new things and got to cheer on an old colleague. Well done pal!
