California and Military Veterans: A Call for Better Financial Recognition
I left California as quickly as I could, and as a veteran, I’m very glad I did. I didn’t fully realize the disparity in how the state treats its veterans. California hosts the most military bases in the nation, with 41 installations significantly contributing to the state’s economy and national security. Yet, in a striking contrast, California is one of only six states (plus D.C.) that fully tax military retirement pay.
This presents a paradox. While California heavily relies on and benefits from its military presence, it doesn’t extend financial benefits to our veterans in retirement. This approach is particularly notable, given that 26 states don’t tax military retirement pay, and nine states have no income tax at all.
Treating our veterans fairly is not just a matter of respect; it’s an acknowledgment of their service and sacrifice. If you live there, I encourage you to advocate for policies that better support our veterans financially in their retirement.
God bless Texas 🤠
