I’ve had an 18 year old paid intern start work with me recently on some summer projects, predominantly helping launch our financial freedom programme, Destination Freedom (more on that later).
I’ve been frankly disgusted with how little prepared she is for the world. She’s had almost no work experience, no careers guidance and as a graphics / digital media person - she’s had absolutely no coaching on the impact of AI on her pathway. Her studies have been entirely theoretical and not remotely aligned with what employers actually need.
Often when coaching or mentoring early careers people, grads and up, I task them with creating a vision for their life. I ask them to think through both personally and professionally where they would like to see themselves in 10 and 20 years time. We can then draw dotted lines backwards from that destination to inform what pathways to take.
But I agree with Toto on reflection, 18 is too young and importantly like with my intern - exposure to different experiences and environments is vital to help shape that vision.
We need young people to try different things without fear or synthetic pressure. But we do need them to understand money. Even without considering student debt, it’s so easy to take wrong turns at a young age with money that can define us for decades. I did, getting into credit card debt and car loans.
I’ve offered my intern Charley a permanent apprenticeship already. We’ll shape a pathway that adds value for the business but exposes her to a range of clients and situations, building her vision and confidence over the next couple of years. If she sticks around great, if she heads off somewhere else to pursue her vision then that’s great too.
Her reaction to our financial literacy and freedom content has been fascinating. No one has ever explained money to her, not saving, investing, compound interest, mortgages, loans, credit, debt. Nothing. She’s already thinking through safeguarding her finances and her route to financial freedom as a key element of that life vision.
