Experienced Sales Enablement, Project, Product, Program and Sales Manager Cybersecurity and Professional Services

Status update It’s been a tough road since being laid off in 2022 after 19 years in technology. Entering the job market at my age (older than the parents of most of my interviewers) is a challenge. Well, you know what they say – when times get tough, grab a shovel. While employed at Dell, my go-to stress relief activity was yard work. In search of perfection with my lawn and gardens, I became an eager student of agricultural sciences. After a while, I started getting approached by neighbors, landscape pros and even a golf course greenskeeper for advice. After my layoff, and 226 application submissions, I started making ends meet by providing landscape work for neighbors. Word travels fast – and I adapt fast. I am now booked weeks in advance, brought on 2 firms for subcontracting and I have GaaS (gardening as a service). Currently, I am considering 3 options – taking the business to the next level, pursuing another role in technology, or maybe both. Regardless, my biggest challenge is coming up with a name for my business. Wild Stallions has been claimed by Bill and Ted. Thow out some ideas in the comments below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

I am amazed and humbled at the response from the LinkedIn community and friends to this post. Your encouragement and thoughtful responses have made a significant impact on my life and a renewed optimism in facing the challenges ahead. For all of that, the interviews and the calls, I truly thank you. Since posting, your encouragement as well as landing several large GaaS customers has led me to come to the decision to pursue development of my landscaping business. I thank you all for your support and will be announcing the business name soon.  If you would like to more about my primary source of motivation, please take a look at my wife's profile, Mindy Henderson. She has overcome the challenges of living with neuro muscular disease and being laid off to achieve great success. She has also made great achievements in improving the lives of people with disabilities: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7105196732883300354/

Hey Michael, I'm in a similar situation as an IT/Network Engineer professional and being laid off and flat out released and outsourced overseas more times than I can count. I just input your "Status Update" and "About info" into Claude AI and here is what he spit out: Based on the update you provided about starting a landscaping/gardening services business after being laid off from the technology industry, here are 10 catchy and clever potential name ideas: 1. Lawn Genius 2. The Yard Craftsmen 3. Garden Gurus 4. Soil Savants 5. Green Thumb Guardians 6. Turf Transformers 7. Botanical Backyard Bliss 8. Landscape Artisans 9. Grassy Knoll Experts 10. Horticultural Harmonizers Some of these play on words related to landscaping/gardening expertise and turning yards into masterpieces. Others highlight the gardening as a service (GaaS) aspect or position the business as trusted authorities. Hope this helps. If you don't like any of these try in out for yourself and see what you come up with. Or try Chatgpt as well. I highly suggest if this new venture keeps you happy and supported, to stick with it and make it boom. The corporate world is not what it used to be. Especially in the Austin area as it too is booming.

You know, you could also consider writing how-to guides on landscaping and other subjects and publishing them on Amazon and other book retailing sites. You walk, the walk, now write the book. I would probably emphasize the pictures in the books, too. Then use your tech smarts to help you build out your online presence to keep moving in the landscaping world. You also seem pretty happy in that picture, so maybe avoid the IT grind and stick with what makes you happy. If you consider this, YouTube has a ton of videos on how to write books, publish, etc. My advice is to listen to many different people and see what makes the most sense. Good luck!

I chuckled when I saw "GaaS"-everything is aaS these days. I like the "both" idea. Over the next couple years you can figure out which one is going to give you what you want for the next 20. New at one and old hat with the other - seems to be a good balance. Wylde Garden Services? You could try this: https://namelix.com/

Interesting what folks do when faced with hardship - I resorted to a jetski business that evolved into a boat dealership for awhile to make ends meet. Business names are tuff - watch out for domain names taken - do an instate name search and register/ reserve a name. Moste creative names are taken and a domain name to match is $$$. Keep it simple like Mike’s H’s green scapes - no fuss lawn maintenance. Then do business as - pick your tax structure LLC /S-Corp, LLP or C-Corp if that fits. The money is in merchandise. Cups t- Shirts but you need a brand following to support it. Best of luck…

Well... Since, "In physical geography, a dell is a grassy hollow—or dried stream bed—often partially covered in trees. In literature, dells have pastoral connotations, frequently imagined as secluded and pleasant safe havens."... Because of your GaaS element, I would go with "Field and Dell Technologies" (the Field is just to avoid undesirable paperwork 😉).

Great story, wonderful picture Mike! Here's what I keep repeating to my close ones (including myself): if it feels right in your gut, follow your heart and don't listen so much to your headbrain. The answer to your question might be right there. What do you think?

This is awesome! I love that you have taken a passion and turned it into income. I'm trying to do the same. It's tiresome looking for work. I spent so much time and money on my education for it to mean nothing but working a bunch of short-term contracts and to have hundreds of employers telling me that despite my years of experience and education that it's still not enough and they've decided to go with someone else. I'm trying to be like you and not have to depend on any entity to help me with making my own living. I'm gonna be doing what I love doing during my time on this earth. Thank you for sharing!

Go ahead and use Wild Stallions. This was Bill and Ted's spelling: "Wyld Stallyns" I can relate to your layoff. I was laid off two weeks ago after 20 years in manufacturing. I'm submitting applications, but it is hard to get back into the groove when you're in your 60s. In your mind you know that the person reviewing your application and resume is thinking, "Hmmm, how long before he retires?" Congratulations on your new path! May it be "fruitful!"

What is more important is the SATISFACTION at the end of the day. If this is giving immense pleasure and you are able top have a good night sleep to be fresh and going next morning then you need to pursue this and expand as being independent and own boss is something very thrilling. Also the important catalyst INCOME if it is giving you that cushion and no debts then you should carry on and you will get new ideas too. Else go back to you IT JOB but don't sail on two boats as this isn't the age to do.
