Network! I want to arrange and host a knowledge sharing cruise on board a sailing yacht. I now need a catchy name for this event. Please help me ideate 🙏 It will take place in Croatia late spring 2024. 8 or 10-12 people, depending on which catamaran and the cruise will be 6-7days. All participants are expected to host a half-day of knowledge sharing, solo or in pairs. Remote work will also be possible thanks to excellent mobile coverage around the sailing islands. 🌙 ⌚ Navigating Your Career Path: Lessons from Night Diving 🌙 🌊 It's weekend, I found myself looking through some old pictures from a muck diving trip in Indonesia. For those unfamiliar with muck diving, it involves slowly and patiently exploring the ocean floor in search of unique and often bizarre underwater creatures. One of the most extraordinary experiences was our night dive. What made this experience truly remarkable was that it all happened in complete darkness. We had to trust our dive guides and rely solely on our compasses, navigation skills, and the torch lights affixed to our foreheads. It struck me how closely this experience mirrored the journey of navigating our career paths. Here are a few invaluable lessons I took away: ✨ Much like in night diving, it's crucial to have a well-defined destination in mind. While we anticipate encountering sea creatures in their natural habitat, there are instances when they prove elusive! Thus, the final result is not always guaranteed. Even though the end goal may not be crystal clear, possessing a vision of where you aim to be, akin to a compass, is important. 👣 In the darkness of the ocean, we could only take one step at a time, relying on the light to guide us. Similarly, in our careers, it's important to take things one step at a time, focusing on the tasks and goals directly in front of us. 🔦 We could only move forward by following the light, which illuminated what was visible in front of us. In our careers, we often need to follow the opportunities and guidance that present themselves, even if we can't see the entire path ahead. The picture below was taken during the night dive. This isn't a mysterious sea creature but rather a shoe that had fallen into the sea! 🤣 🤣 The shiny spots are plankton. It serves as a reminder that unexpected surprises and challenges can arise in our careers. Embracing these adventures, even with a touch of humour, can lead to unexpected discoveries and growth. Just as we discovered incredible marine life in the dark depths of the ocean, your career journey may also lead you to unexpected and amazing opportunities. MAINTAINING STANDARDS A dive master (DM) is a qualification that allows you to lead qualified scuba divers on ‘fun dives’ as well as potentially lead scientific dives. To become a DM you are required to pass a series of qualifying dives where you demonstrate your skills & competency, following this you are required to maintain insurance in the event of any incidents. Becoming a DM had been a goal of mine for a while. After starting my DMIT (Dive Master In Training) in Sydney covid paused this goal. I therefore wanted to use my sabbatical to complete this goal. I dived a few more times earlier this year, including in the Galápagos Islands which was incredible. However the course of these dives confirmed my decision to abandon this aspiration. Scuba diving is a high risk activity but is mitigated by systems, processes & certification of divers. However, diving is a commercial activity & once certified a significant number of divers do not practice their skills regularly, leading to skill fade (see my corresponding post). As such, standards are not maintained which leads to a decrease in safety. Couple this with an apathy/laziness/ lack of accountability that some recreational divers exhibit, it’s a formula for tragedy. I’ve experienced several ‘near miss’ incidents on dives. Additionally, these have not been followed by corrective actions (mid dive) or debriefs (post dive). Failure to maintain baseline standards results in poor execution at best,at worst it can lead to fatalities. After an intense training week in Tenerife, I emerged, literally transformed. It's incredible what I experienced in that week. Mastering the depths was not just a physical challenge but a profound mental journey, down in the dark blue. Descending into the unknown and reemerging was deeply moving for me. I've pushed my limits, often surpassing them. As a motivational speaker, the idea of self-improvement is always a key part of my talks. While it might sound overused, the message remains crucial: we should occasionally explore new things, and challenge ourselves. You don't need adventures like Ocean diving or balloon jumps into the jet stream to do this, but they can serve as examples. In my case, I aim to show that regular people with average abilities can achieve more than they would think. Our so-called limits are constructs of the mind. Experiencing the elements with your body and connecting with the planet is a beautiful sensation. Resurfacing felt like a rebirth. We have captured some impressive footage from my perspective. Now the training continues and intensifies. Lifelong Learning!  Humility I love seeing aquatic life and with each dive I wish I could stay down longer to see more; but I’ve been known to “chew air”. My dive buddies and I were fortunate enough to see a school of Bigeye Jacks on our recent dive trip. Anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 Jacks can be found in a school. These Jacks are one of 150 species of Jacks, out of 34,300 fish species with an estimated 3.5 trillion living aquatic creators. The vastness of the oceans and the power of nature require humility, patience and the openness to learn.  SCUBA diving and earning certifications with #PADI is part of how I personally renew and embrace the continuous learning of humility. Professionally, the CHRO program at #WhartonExecEd gave me a chance to see where I am truly a Human Capital expert and where I need work—and the program provides opportunity, in spades, to humbly do the work. The more I embrace the fact that I am NOT an expert in all things (eek!) -- the more I learn from each opportunity to engage with experts (YOU). The colleagues I was lucky enough to spend time with reminded me that I’m at my best when surrounded by smarter people who challenge us all to do whatever we do, better. Yes, when everyone gets back into the boat and talks about what they saw and how much air they have left, I humbly say, I am learning. It takes practice, and with each dive, I chew less air, apply more confidently the skills I have and spend more time enjoying. For me, the journey of learning, personal and professional is a great practice of humility – in and out of the water.
