*Systems Science is dead; Long live Systems Science* (Part n of Infinity) This is wonderful news. When we cleaned out Harder House offices before the demolishing, we found so many classics from the 60s-70s era---many of them currently out-of-print. More endeavors like this are necessary to transmit knowledge from that era to newer generations of humanity. https://lnkd.in/gCWzJPms Reanimating those long dead books is going to take a while, but in the meantime, you can always read Martin Zwick's Elements and Relations. #systemsscience #cybernetics #generalsystemstheory

Co-founder The Liberators & Columinity: a product that helps teams improve based on scientific insights. 🚀
Meetup: How Liberating Structures Links To Complexity Science 🧐 Liberating Structures are inspired and informed by complexity science: the science of emergence. In complexity science, researchers examine how simple rules or behaviors at the individual level can lead to complex and unpredictable outcomes at the system level. Liberating Structures provides practical methods for dealing with complex and adaptive challenges. Both emphasize the importance of collaboration, emergence, and adaptability in navigating the complexities of the modern world. Liberating Structures can help you spark change across the various levels of a system. During this public meetup, we'll explore the roots of Liberating Structures and their connection with complexity science in more detail. We'll do this together with our special guest, Henri Lipmanowicz! 🥳 Together with Keith McCandless, he co-created Liberating Structures. Sounds interesting? Sign up here: http://bit.ly/2StU2Im

"Life itself is the most imaginative innovator. For me bringing matter to life starts by discovering the principles of how living systems function, abstracting them within the language of theoretical physics and bringing them ‘life’ in synthetic systems. Specifically, I focus on the role of fluid flows in the multitude of living networks such as our vasculature but also network-forming organisms. Currently I am particularly excited on how network-forming organisms can learn with the help of fluid flow and how to employ these mechanisms to build materials that learn on their own." This is how MtL Fellow Karen Alim from Technische Universität München describes her own research. Curious to find out more? Join us next Wednesday for her virtual lecture on "Lessons from Smart Slime: From Memories to Behaviour"! Register here 👉 https://buff.ly/3SXQnDO

Research Group Leader "Predictive Simulation Software": Scientific and High Performance computing, Mathematical Life Sciences, Data science
Happy that I could present our work (with Julia Bicker and René Schmieding) on Hybrid epidemiological models for efficient insight on the individual scale: a contribution to green computing at the Leopoldina – German National Academy of Sciences. To manage the trade-off between computational complexity and level of detail, we propose spatial- and temporal-hybrid models that uses an agent-based model in an area or time frame of interest. To account for relevant influences to disease dynamics in a spatial focus region, e.g., due to commuting activities, we use equation-based models in the neighboring regions, only adding moderate computational costs. Our spatial hybridization approach demonstrates significant reduction in computational effort by more than 90 % without losing the required depth in information.

100 years of quantum is just the beginning… An international partnership of major scientific bodies and academies is preparing a resolution for the 2023 General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the 2023 General Assembly of the United Nations to proclaim 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. This year-long initiative would celebrate the profound impacts of quantum science on technology, culture, and our understanding of the natural world. https://lnkd.in/excVJESY
