How do you feel when you get an opportunity to give yourself a treat for an achievement? Every year our department at college arranges an inter house wall magazine competition where four houses engage in a healthy competition. Our houses are named after four prominent writers hailing from four different periods in the history of English literature - Milton House, Wordsworth House, Tennyson House and Yeats House. I'm a member of the Tennyson House. Our house secured 2nd position in the competition. Congratulations to all of us! Our writings were based on the theme of art and culture of Bengal, titled - "Let The Heart Beat Again". My article " Dokra : The Sorcery of Metal" proudly secured a spot in that magazine. As a member of the Editorial team, I collaborated with my fellow editors to edit a collection of poems and articles. I utilized my proofreading skills to their fullest, ensuring that the selected writings were free of grammatical and punctuation errors. Anyway, coming in second position is still a good achievement. Where there's competition, there are rankings. At least we get to learn a lot from the experience. What truly matters is having the right mindset and a growth-oriented attitude. This is what helped us secure this position, since last time we finished in fourth place. And many congrats to Milton House for clinching 1st position! (P. "When I’m writing well, I have this very clear and distinct feeling that what I’m writing on is already written. It’s somewhere out there. I just have to write it down before it disappears." - newly awarded literature laureate Jon Fosse on the source of his writing Fosse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature earlier today. This is my latest bio: Douglas Unger has long been known as a writer of political fiction. He is the author of five novels, including LEAVING THE LAND, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Robert F. Kennedy Award, and VOICES FROM SILENCE, a year’s end selection by "The Washington Post’s Book World." He is also the author of the short story collection LOOKING FOR WAR AND OTHER STORIES. Unger’s writing has appeared in "Narrative," "Boulevard," "Southwest Review," "The Los Angeles Review of Books," "The Brooklyn Rail," and numerous other publications. He is cofounder of the MFA in Creative Writing International and the PhD with Creative Dissertation programs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he teaches in the Department of English affiliated with the Black Mountain Institute, an important literary center in the American West. Unger also serves on the executive board of Words without Borders (https://lnkd.in/gkhbR4Uq). In 2007, he was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. His fifth novel (sixth book), DREAM CITY, will be published in October by the University of Nevada Press. More information about his new book at: https://lnkd.in/gfiyH9xg Added to this author bio, I am proud to be a labor movement activist in addition to a writer and teacher. Four the past four years, I have served as UNLV Chapter President of the Nevada Faculty Alliance affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFL-CIO) and the AAUP, also as a Government Affairs representative for the NFA for three sessions of the Nevada Legislature and to two Nevada Governors. In 2018-19, I also served as Chair of the UNLV Faculty Senate and the Chair of Chairs for the Nevada System of Higher Education Faculty Senates. My take on faculty governance is that, yes, internal governance organizations such as Faculty Senates are very worthwhile and useful to achieve the missions and goals of Higher Education to serve our students, but that external advocacy, in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in the AFL-CIO unions, is a far more impactful and unencumbered pathway toward influencing, reforming, and transforming Higher Education institutions better to meet our students' needs and to help steward their professional development. A unionized campus is a happier and more effective campus for all, and a campus more responsive to the demands and challenges of the new century.
