When I began my preparation, I knew I would have to practice DSA questions a lot. 👋 Hi LinkedIn fam! Following my previous post, many of you asked how I managed CAT preparation alongside my full-time job. Here's a peek into my daily grind! 🚀 Balancing my CAT prep with my SDE role at PayU was a meticulous task, requiring me to streamline my social life and optimize every spare minute. Here’s a breakdown of my daily schedule: 📅 Weekdays: 🌅 5:30 AM: Wake up and get freshened up.   📖 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Initially, I focused on VARC classes and practicing RCs and VA questions. Later, I transitioned to taking VARC mocks and the CL daily dose.   🍳 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM: Breakfast, get ready for office, and commute.   💻 8:30 AM - 7:30 PM: Office work and travel back home.   📚 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM: Dedicated to LRDI—watching lessons, practicing LRDI sets from various sources, or taking sectional mocks.   🍽️ 9:30 PM - 10:30 PM: Dinner with Netflix and a call to my parents.   📝 10:30 PM - 12:00 AM: QA classes or mocks.  🛋️ Weekends: After a hectic week, Saturdays are my comfort zone. I typically wake up around 7:30-8:00 AM and divide my day into four slots: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. 🎥 Saturday:   - Morning: Watch pending lectures and revise old concepts.   - Afternoon: Take one full-length or 2-3 sectional mocks.   - Evening: Analyze the solutions and mark critical concepts. - Night: Relax, sometimes go out with friends or enjoy a movie night to unwind. 📚 Sunday:   - Similar to Saturday with revision, lectures, and mocks.   - Wrap up by 10:00 PM and plan the week. This was my routine from January to November last year. 🗓️ It was challenging but gratifying! 💡 Remember, it’s all about balance and determination. As a software engineer, you don’t need to know everything. When I started my first job at Ericsson, I had no knowledge of Linux commands or how charging systems worked. Upon joining Paytm, I lacked a full understanding of Git, Jenkins, and how Android apps functioned. Transitioning to Amdocs introduced me to new concepts like 5G, DevOps, and generative AI, which were previously unfamiliar to me. Later, switching teams brought a whole new set of challenges, including diving into features related to charging systems and other areas. Remember, as a software engineer, you don’t need to know everything. The key is knowing where to find the information when you need it.

In the tech world, one concept you can't master by just reading texts or few blogs is System Design. Said that, whether you are set to design a new project at work, or trying to scale an old system or preparing to crack your dream job, System Design is a must know skill today ! But it's a skill you can only master after working on variety of real world scalable problems. Back at my first job at PayPal, I went into the office at 5AM one day for a last-minute sprint on a major project with CTO visibility. I thought I was cool. It's easily one of the dumbest things I have ever done in my entire life. At the end of the day, you work to live, not live to work. It makes 0 sense to sacrifice your life so much for something work-related. Careers are long. Even if you're put on a PIP or get laid off, you can (and will) eventually recover. It's a marathon, not a race. On the other hand, your personal health is much harder to repair. Health issues from stress, lack of sleep, and a sedentary lifestyle coding all day aren't easily reversible. And as you get older, you'll have a forcing function that amplifies this reality. You'll have less time and less energy but higher expectations overall. If you want to have a long-lasting career, you absolutely have to preserve your work-life balance. 🚀 Reflecting on my first year at PayPal and introspecting: Building products for internal teams' vs external users which one is better? This was my first experience of building products for external users, and candidly I confess of never caring more about user experiences before. While building products for internal teams is easier and faster coz the PM has direct access to the users and is more aware of the organizations internal pain points and processes, it is definitely more rewarding when you see tons of external users' feedback about how your efforts are impacting their lives every day! If, like me, you find thrill in speed, and sometimes struggle to keep up with the elaborate processes of understanding the diverse range of consumer personas, market trends, UI or regulatory restrictions believe me you are not alone.
