Yesterday, my San Antonio based team members came together to celebrate birthdays, a work anniversary and new home ownership. We all work from home but that doesn’t mean we are disconnected from one another-personally or professionally. We even attempted to FaceTime our team mate who is in Montana into the celebration but we had technical difficulties. Collaboration and Communication are non-negotiables on our team. I’m not talking about regularly scheduled meetings or project check ins-we don’t really do a ton of that. I’m talking about proactive engagement, inclusion, leveraging strengths, opinions and expertise across the team as a way of working. You can see the results of this way of working in their genuine smiles and enjoyment when we get together. It also shows up in the thoughtfulness and quality of the work that is produced. This doesn’t happen auto-magically. It takes intention and repetition. Open-mindedness and humility are required. And leaders need to role model expected behaviors.
