What is the DNA of a shorter working week company? 🧬 I often get asked a version of this question, and a case study in Canadian HR Reporter this week really stood out for me in illustrating some of the unique characteristics that make organizations that successfully adopt this model tick. ✅️ Grand Challenges Canada is a purposeful organization that really makes a difference. It has a high-performing, high-impact team that is dedicated to improving and saving lives. Given the significance of their work, why did they embrace a #4DayWeek? 🤔 First and foremost, innovation is a core part of their culture. They are not only open to experimentation but are proactive in testing new ideas to drive continuous improvement. 🧪 This was an opportunity to differentiate themselves in the pursuit of top talent - "an amazing attraction and retention strategy for our best and brightest.” 💡 This was also a benefit that was clearly tied to performance. Successfully operating as a four-day week organization in a predominantly five-day week world requires a mature culture built on trust, autonomy, collective responsibility, and performance accountability. For me, the best things about Impression are its culture and its commitment to being a great place to work. This morning Rose Watkins Jones hosted the first of three annual Benefits Focus Groups, which help determine whether our current benefits are still valued or if we’d like to explore new ones. In the spirit of sharing, here's what our approach looks like 👇 🔸 Everyone is given the opportunity to volunteer to take part, regardless of role or level  🔸 We're sent a list of 30+ benefits in advance of the session, with an option to add any that we've thought of ourselves 🔸 We have 10 points to allocate across our desired benefits, weighted as we like 🔸 An hour's session is scheduled to discuss where we allocated our points and why It's informal, collaborative and a safe space to share opinions and listen to others without judgment. 🤝 Interestingly, a few of us changed our minds about which benefits we'd originally listed as most important to us after hearing different perspectives, showing the value in having group discussions for this kind of stuff. And action actually comes off the back of these sessions, too. For example, our 4.5 working week happened as a direct result of last year's Benefits Focus Groups, plus other perks. 👏 Thanks, Impression and Rose for listening and importantly, acting! ❤️

Changing from a 5 to a 4 day work week globally as the new norm is a challenge worth taking. Taking this challenge will strengthen all the needed skills companies need to thrive now and in the future. Here is what she had to say: "April 10th is Global Work From Home Day! A few years ago, we introduced a human-centric way of working at Top Employers Institute, which makes every day a 'work-from-home day' if you feel that is the most productive for you as a person. We have non-mandatory team days in the office. These are not so that people feel pressured to work from the office but to create moments to co-work, collaborate, and ask instant questions. We've found that giving people the right to choose for themselves makes the office busier than an enforced four-day in-office policy. That's because it allows for individual and team preferences. At the core of our approach, productivity strongly correlates with personal preferences, trust, and empowerment to deliver results. Some people perform best in their familiar home setup, while others thrive with the energy in the office. By embracing this diversity, we put our people in the driver's seat of their own success and, consequently, the growth of our business. Recently, we spent a few days on the Pyrenees with the leadership team, working on ourselves and our business from the beautiful mountains, challenged by a snowy trail– yes, this is also possible! Changing the scene helps us think differently, having a new perspective on everyday matters and how we work together. As we celebrate Work From Home Day, I want to see it not as a one-time event of the year but as a reminder of how having choices can be transformative. We prioritise the well-being and autonomy of our teams, which helps with productivity and growth and creates a workplace where everyone can shine."
