🌟 Exploring the Roots of Memorial Day with African Americans 🌟 As we reflect on the origins of Memorial Day, it is crucial to recognize the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans in shaping this solemn occasion. Following the Civil War, formerly enslaved individuals, known as Freedmen, played a pivotal role in commemorating fallen Union soldiers by decorating their graves. This act of remembrance evolved into what we now observe as Memorial Day, a day to honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. 🌺 Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day: Unveiling the Differences 🌺 🔹 Armed Forces Day: Celebrated on the third Saturday in May, Armed Forces Day pays tribute to the men and women currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, showcasing their dedication and bravery in safeguarding our nation. 🔹 Veterans Day: Observed on November 11th, Veterans Day honors all military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, expressing gratitude for their service, sacrifices, and contributions to our country's freedom. 🔹 Memorial Day: Held on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day solemnly commemorates the brave individuals who died while serving in the U.S. military. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for their selfless devotion to our nation. Let us embrace the rich history and significance of these observances, cherishing the diverse narratives and sacrifices that have shaped our nation's legacy. 🇺🇸 #MemorialDay #AfricanAmericanHistory #HonoringHeroes #Veterans #ArmedForces #NeverForget #Respect #usa #Remember #everyonefollowers #everyonehighlights #holiday #blackhistory #americanhistory #highlightseveryone

This short video never fails to send shivers down my spine… There are nearly 2 million living women veterans in the United States… Women currently make up approximately 10% of the overall veteran population… Veterans make up 14% of the men in America…but among women in America, only 1.5% are veterans. ➡️ In order to meet 1 woman veteran, you may have to meet 69 women. ➡️ To meet just one woman under age 35 who has served in the military, you may have to meet 102 women of that age group. ➡️ The median age of male veterans is 65 years, while the median age of women veterans is 51 years, a difference of 14 years. #veteran #military #veteransday #women #airforce #navy #marines #army #spaceforce #coastguard #nationaldefense #leadership #empowerment

Honor veterans @yourlibrary--but not just the patrons! Texas A&M University #librarian Sarah LeMire notes that the "literature about military veterans in libraries, to date, has been almost exclusively focused on patrons who are military veterans. Although serving and supporting veterans as patrons is an important topic, it is also important to remember that the veteran community within libraries includes more than just patrons. There are also military veterans who work in libraries, though there is little information on how many or in which roles." Check out Sarah's paper "Veterans as Library Employees: Insights and Ideas for Library Administrators" to find out more on this topic: Sarah LeMire (2023) Veterans as Library Employees: Insights and Ideas for Library Administrators, Journal of Library Administration, 63:6, 842-849, DOI:10.1080/01930826.2023.2240196

As we celebrate the 77th Independence Day of our great nation, I want to take a moment to revere and recognise the military veterans who have served our country with unwavering dedication and sacrifice. Your commitment to defending our freedom is truly commendable, and we owe you a debt of gratitude. As a transitioning military officer, I understand the importance of making choices about our future careers. It is a time of both excitement and uncertainty, as we embark on a new chapter of our lives. However, let us remember that the possibilities are limitless, and we should not restrict ourselves to the traditional corporate path. This Independence Day, I encourage my fellow veterans to explore a plenitude of professional opportunities and follow their passions. The skills and experiences gained during our military service have equipped us with a unique set of abilities that can thrive in various fields. Let us embrace this diversity and bring forth a plethora of avenues for ourselves and others. Whether it's entrepreneurship, public service, nonprofit work, media or any other path that ignites our passion, let us not be afraid to pursue it. Our nation was built on the principles of freedom and opportunity, and we have the power to shape our own destinies, .
