Within the UK National Climate Science Partnership (UKNCSP), the Met Office and NERC: Natural Environment Research Council-supported Research Centres join forces to connect and leverage their #climate research capabilities, and work towards a shared vision of the UK as a global leader in #ClimateScience for climate solutions. A new webinar series will kick off soon to share plans and progress with UKNCSP, and to engage the community as activities develop. The first webinar will take place next week on Friday 19 July at 11:00 – 12:00 BST and discuss climate information ‘beyond UKCP18’, as the current climate projections products are being reviewed in the context of evolving user needs and developments in climate science. The webinar offers an opportunity to learn more about a potential vision for a broader and more usable package of Climate Information (UKCI), and to get involved in the process. Prof Jason Lowe, Principal Fellow/Head of Climate Services for Government at the Met Office and Chair in Interdisciplinary Climate Research, Priestley Centre, University of Leeds, and Dr Carol McSweeney, Science Manager and Deputy UKCP Science Lead at the Met Office, will be leading the webinar, with contributions from other scientists from the Met Office, University of Bristol and National Centre for Atmospheric Science. The webinar is free to attend. You can find all information and a link to register here: https://lnkd.in/eAmQ7pJb

Leading U.S. scientists, including Dr. William Anderegg, Director of the Wilkes Center for Climate Science & Policy at the University of Utah, and policy experts with a broad range of expertise in the fields of climate and ecosystem sciences have outlined key recommendations aimed at bolstering the scientific foundation for implementation of Nature-based Climate Solutions (NbCS) across the nation. These solutions, which include strategies like protecting carbon-dense forests and wetlands, improving land management, and restoring natural ecosystems, are crucial for enhancing carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The stakes are very high - getting NbCS right could mean the difference between achieving long-term global greenhouse gas reduction goals or missing those targets and further destabilizing the climate system. Although NbCS strategies have potential, on the ground implementation of NbCS has been controversial, often outpacing the scientific understanding of their long-term benefits. The group calls for a more robust, evidence-based approach for NbCS so they can be deployed when and where they are most likely to succeed as climate solutions. What does successful knowledge brokering between climate scientists and government look like? Climate scientists offer findings, knowledge and expertise based on their research to influence and engage policy, while policymakers balance effective and actionable policy with scientific advice. Policymakers sometimes find it hard to determine the utility of research findings. Misunderstanding information can lead to erroneous conclusions and sometimes to disillusionment amongst parties or even fractured relationships. Policy outcomes suffer as a result. In her new article, Angela Kaplish, knowledge broker at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, shares a practitioner guide for knowledge brokering to help bridge the climate scientist-policymaker gap. Kaplish said: "In my role as Lead Knowledge Broker for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, and with prior experience as a federal public servant, I work with academics to share their knowledge with a wider audience – primarily government – to facilitate communication and achieve improved outcomes for all." Looking for an important read? Here it is. There is a lot to do, especially given that we already are passing the 1.5°C climate policy aim...
Former Blue Book Trainee in RTD @ European Commission | Associate Researcher @ Norwich Institute | MSc Environment and International Development
It has been released! 🚀 The next frontier for climate change science. This report provides key insights from authors of the IPCCs 6th assessment report on knowledge gaps and research priorities. The report will inform future research calls under the European Commissions research programs, to close knowledge gaps and address climate change efficiently. I am very thankful for having been able to contribute to this report, working on the cutting edge of climate science and together with great colleagues at the European Commission and IPCC authors that I have always looked up to. It has been a pleasure! https://lnkd.in/eJjDPeBq

Now that 17th annual The Graduate Climate Conference (GCC) has commenced, I'd like to share a recap. For those who are unfamiliar, The Graduate Climate Conference (GCC) is an interdisciplinary climate conference run by graduate students, for graduate students. It continues to be one of the most productive and welcoming conferences I have been to, and I am proud to say that I was one of many student organizers that made this conference possible. Over 100 graduate students, from 58 different institutions, attended this 3-day conference hosted at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This National Science Foundation (NSF) funded conference provides a welcoming and engaging environment to support collaborations between interdisciplinary sciences, a critical component when tackling complex issues like climate change. I am currently the organizer of the Recording and Evaluation committee for the GCC, where our goal is to understand how our participants are engaging with the conference, and where we as organizers can improve upon year-after-year. Under my leadership, our annual feedback survey now includes: - A demographic section to ensure minority demographic voices are being heard and not averaged over. - An updated DEI section to ensure our participants feel welcomed and that their accessibility needs were met. - Developed code that automatically analyzes survey data and highlights trends. - and much more... Additionally, I presented my newly published work in poster form, where I highlighted the importance of understanding how cloud-radiative feedbacks can lead to the maintenance of the Madden-Julian Oscillation, a critical atmospheric disturbance that affects over 400 million people locally over the Maritime Continent, and much more globally through teleconnections. This research was conducted with my Master's advisor, Dr. Naoko Sakaeda, and can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dDhC9KEb Overall, the 17th annual GCC was a huge success and I'm looking forward to making the GCC even better in 2024!!
