Today is UN Biodiversity’s International Day for Biological Diversity and this year’s theme is “be part of the plan”. Everyone from governments, businesses, and individuals, has a part to play in restoring and maintaining biodiversity, including the Met Office. At our head office in Exeter we have recognised the need to promote and protect biodiversity on site, taking wildlife actions including introducing areas of wildflower meadow, installing bat and bird boxes, and creating wood piles for hibernating reptiles and amphibians. We have many staff members who are passionate about monitoring and promoting our local biodiversity, with regular surveys that have enabled us to have recorded over 500 species of plants, fungi, insects, butterflies, moths, birds, bats, reptiles, and mammals on site – and the number continues to grow. So, on this #BiodiversityDay, we’d love to hear about the biodiversity around you, whether at your workplace, your garden, or out and about locally. Feel free to share what you’ve found in the comments. Find out more about how we are making ourselves part of the plan: https://lnkd.in/eB2UxN-w #Biodiversity #BiodiversityPlan #GetClimateReady

For Threatened Species Day we are putting our Spiny Peppercress centre stage 🌱 The Spiny Peppercress is a native plant species found within our Alleena project. It holds significant ecological importance, warranting diligent conservation efforts from our ecologists. This small herbaceous plant thrives in diverse habitats, ranging from grasslands to woodlands. Its survival is crucial for many reasons including: 1. Biodiversity The Spiny Peppercress contributes to the overall biodiversity of NSW's ecosystems, it plays a role in supporting species food chains and providing habitat for various insects and small animals. 2. Ecosystem Health Its presence is an indicator of ecosystem health. Its decline could signify broader issues, such as habitat degradation, invasive species, or changes in land use. 3. Genetic Diversity Conserving Spiny Peppercress ensures the preservation of its genetic diversity. This genetic pool could be valuable for potential crop improvement or adaptation to changing environmental conditions. 4. Pollination and Seed Dispersal The plant's flowering and seed production contribute to pollination and seed dispersal networks, benefiting other plant species in its ecosystem. By preserving the Spiny Peppercress, Wilderlands contribute to the overall health and vitality of NSW's ecosystems, ensuring a diverse and sustainable natural environment. The idea of charismatic biodiversity, focused on animals like tigers and lions, is misleading. Every creature is important, and they are all interconnected in a complex process that requires careful observation. We should pay close attention to creatures like ants, geckos on walls, cockroaches in the kitchen, birds outside our windows, and spiders in the corners of our rooms, as these are the ones we can relate to closely. Relatability and proximity to such creatures are more helpful in understanding biodiversity. There are fascinating aspects to discover, like the Calotropis weed (a weed we seek twice a year), and the intriguing behavior of the carpenter bee, which buzz pollinates flowers. Insects and other creatures find shelter in various ways as part of the complex web of life. Let us broaden our definitions around conservation. Let us observe the biodiversity right around us. #foodforthought #biodiversity #saveanimals

TIR Europe is proud to announce the launch of TIR's Winged Biodiversity Program, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the habitat for birds, bats, and pollinators within our forest stewardship efforts. This program underscores our commitment to sustainability and ecosystem health. The Winged Biodiversity Program will roll out in three dynamic phases: 🌲 Implementing best management practices in forest plans to boost biodiversity. 🦉 Opening our lands for in-depth research by scientists studying the impact of winged species on ecosystems. 🌳 Collaborating with stakeholders like recreation lessees and the birding community to broaden conservation efforts. Guided by a panel of experts from state wildlife departments, academia, and conservation organizations, this initiative not only supports our flying friends but also amplifies broader environmental benefits such as better water quality and enhanced carbon capture. #Sustainability #Conservation #Biodiversity

Latin America and the Caribbean contain more than 50% of Earth's biodiversity. However, in the past 50 years, the region has experienced the greatest biodiversity decline of anywhere on the planet — suffering a more than 90 percent drop in wildlife abundance. To protect biodiversity in these crucial places, we need to think big — and that's where ABC's BirdsPlus program comes in. BirdsPlus connects people on working lands to financing and markets that can help unlock large funding streams, enabling them to scale up habitat conservation and restoration for migratory birds. Learn more by watching last week's webinar with our BirdsPlus team & guest speaker, Juan Fernando Letona, who gave us a first-hand account of how this strategy works on his rubber farm in Costa Rica. https://bit.ly/46r7a6e #BirdsPlus #ABCBirdsPlus #ABCBirds #MigratoryBirds #FallMigration #AvianMigration #BirdConservation #HabitatConservation #BirdsLatinAmerica #FarmersForBirds #FarmersForWildlife

The UK’s first two Leko boxes were installed outside our Kingswood office late last year. Since then, the solar-powered devices have been collecting data on Kingswood’s wildest visitors. In June alone, the boxes picked up 36,289 sounds from eight different bat species outside the office! That’s great news as bats are extremely good bioindicators, so a high presence of bats and a diverse number of species = a healthy ecosystem. It also picked up 16,974 bird songs. 🐦 By counting population numbers, we can analyse and understand any changes in local biodiversity, meaning we’re able to take more informed conservation action. Helping to encourage biodiversity, whilst also actively monitoring the species surrounding our site with our nature-listening and measuring technology, is supporting our ecological transformation purpose 🌳 #Biodiversity #EcologicalTransformation

Grief it is. In 2023 only, 21 species went #extinct in USA. Our work on #biodiversity and #naturebasedsolutions should accelerate and be implemented world wide in a bigger scale, before it is too late to change the course. This is what we have aimed for decades at Wild at Life e.V. We simply need to bring capital markets to conservation and see the value of ecosystem as ours. https://lnkd.in/eKscTw5E

Biodiversity credits can be a game-changer for businesses looking to showcase their commitment to environmental stewardship. They provide essential funding for preserving natural habitats and protecting endangered species, while also serving as a tangible metric for companies to disclose their environmental contributions. As sustainability becomes increasingly demanded by consumers, investors, and regulators, embracing biodiversity credits can lead by example and promote a culture of responsibility beyond #offset towards a more sustainable and responsible business model. #BiodiversityCredits #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability Nat5 Sven Kallen Life Terra Foundation
🌿 Unlocking the Future of Conservation: The Power of Biodiversity Credits 🌿 In an era where environmental sustainability is no longer optional but imperative, an innovative financial mechanism is making waves in the realm of conservation and corporate responsibiliy: #BiodiversityCredits. These natural assets are not just a tool for financing #conservation efforts but also a transformative approach for companies to demonstrate their commitment to the planet and to disclose their contributions to #climateaction transparently. Biodiversity credits offer a dual benefit. Firstly, they provide essential funding for preserving and restoring natural habitats, which are crucial for biodiversity. By investing in these credits, companies play a direct role in protecting endangered species, maintaining ecosystems, and ensuring the health of our planet for future generations. Secondly, these credits serve as a tangible metric for businesses to showcase their environmental contributions. In an age where consumers, investors, and regulators increasingly demand sustainability, biodiversity credits enable companies to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship. This is not about offsetting impacts but about taking proactive steps towards a more sustainable and responsible business model. The Finca Alía, Spain ecological restoration project, developed by Life Terra Foundation and certified by the #aOCP, marks a significant milestone in reducing habitat #fragmentation in the region. Thanks to its restoration activities, animal species are now able to roam through larger, more connected parcels of land. #Keystonespecies such as #Canislupus are expected to repopulate this region shortly. Individuals have already been sighted 100 km from the area. The Canis lupus plays a crucial ecological role as the top predator in the area, and its presence is vital for helping to control herbivore populations. The message is clear: biodiversity credits are more than a financial instrument; they are a call to action 🌿.
