In a study recently published in PNAS, researchers led by Wayne Sossin at The Neuro found that neurons have a protein synthesis "pause" button that other cells do not. This allows neurons to make proteins at the synapse which is far away from the parts of the cell where proteins are usually made. Mutations in genes responsible for this function are linked to neurodevelopmental disorders like autism. Understanding this process helps reveal their underlying mechanisms. Induced pluripotent stem cells can be differentiated into all the cells of a full-grown organism.
