A standing slow clap for Michael Corcoran today and his brilliant brain and leadership behind the socials of Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline. We at Greatest Of All Digital have been tremendous fans of what he and his team accomplished over the years. Finding creative ways to take a logo online and bring it to life with hilarious personality, joy, flawless comedic timing, and ultimately bringing brand relevance, differentiation, organic audience and new customer growth (read real Revenue) for millions of consumers. He shared this thread on his departure (thank you Michael J. Miraflor for elevating this) and it gave me great pause. Instead of his teammates celebrating the epic work done, we see behind the scenes of a tremendously disappointing thread from the perspective of Ryanair's leadership or lack thereof. My message here to share more broadly and hopefully help people who may feel alone in this-- in my experience, EVERYONE who has shipped something new or done something differently in a company has likely experienced the things he shared in his thread. Also know, this happens at absolutely every level as well. It's not a job title thing, it's a human / power thing. The notion of crushing it at work and rising the ranks really doesn't exist in the way the media and education systems portrays it and I wish more people spoke about this publicly. What you are learning when you join an organization isn't your job, but it is how to understand power dynamics, leverage and systems that were built by people (eg flawed) and these things aren't linear, they're nuanced. I had a very difficult time when I transitioned from Entrepreneur to Corporate Exec and worked with a brilliant coach who helped me better understand this (after a lot of fails). Everything that made me successful at growing my start-up caused me tremendous problems within the corporate world. She shared with me- when you join an organization, you are opting in to learn their system. Learning and understanding their system is the job and you get to decide how and when you want to partake in that system. It helped me reframe my work and does to this day. The Big Questions here- how do you impact change in large organizations to enable your best players vs chase them out? Can organizations afford the brain drain when this is how our best and brightest talent feels everyday they go to work or is the constant struggle what makes the work great? Work isn't a joyful fairyland place where everyone has each other's back- far from it- but at its best, it should feel like a winning sports team, and in every case- what kind of a teammate or coach do you want to be? I don't know Michael personally, but one of my greatest joys in life is celebrating work that is just excellent which is an ambition we have for Greatest Of All Digital and this was just that. "Sorry ma'am, we can't help you." 🙄 (aka, my rule book, the system and my automatically programmed answers don't cater for your individual customer needs or requirements.) 😵 ✈️ I love Qantas. I've flown Qantas, ever since I've had a business and travelled almost monthly...so much that I earnt myself a silver flyer status with them. ❤️ But then... I couldn't fly Qantas as I lived overseas for 2 years where Qantas doesn't exist. I arrived back in Aussie this month, and have loads of travel planned for the next 3 months - all with Qantas. 🥲 My silver status expires today, and I need just 60 status points to retain it. I have flights booked throughout Dec that will equate to far and above the 60 status points - just a week too late to save my status benefits. I called the frequent flyer team to ask if it was possible to get a couple weeks extension on the expiry date, so I could maintain my status. 📞🤙 After speaking to 3 different people, I finally got onto the right contact, waited on hold, and was finally told..."sorry ma'am there's nothing I can do. The system, you see". 🙄 I totally understand that systems, rules and protocols have to exist around such things. I'm also fine with not receiving my extension. However - it sparked a thought. ☀️💡 🪨 EMPOWERMENT. What is the point of having a customer service team, if they aren't given the permission and ability to provide REAL SERVICE? Customer satisfaction and creating raving fans for our brands should always be top priority in decision making. ❌ Customer service is NOT just answering questions, and providing information. It is SO much more. It is about SERVING your customers. Providing solutions to their troubles. Making decisions that go the extra mile. Is every member on your team empowered and given the tools and permission to make the necessary decisions to make and keep your customers happy? 💭 🚀 Empowering our teams to truly care for our customers needs and wants, is the #1 ingredient to building a successful brand that people love. 60 Seconds With … Mirjam Scherer 🚀 Meet Mirjam Scherer, the Global Head of Specials Logistics at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, has garnered more than 15 years of experience across sales, management and cargo logistics. Having joined KLM in 2002, prior to its merger with Air France, she has worked in a number of roles on both the passenger and cargo side of operations. ✈ How did you get into the air freight industry? It was kind of a coincidence because my background is in hotel management. However, I have always loved the KLM brand, so I applied for a job at KLM because of the international environment. While working for KLM, I used to ride horses as I was really a horse girl when I was young. Then, in 2007, I saw a job posting for a sales manager for live horses and thought, "Well, that combines my commercial competences with my personal interest in horses." I applied for the job and was hired, and since then, I have mostly been in air cargo, of which 7 years involved in the transportation of live animals. ✈ If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To let people truly listen to each other. Many people tend to speak without really hearing what others have to say. Better listening would lead to better understanding, and I think that would help a lot. ✈ If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would it be and why? I'm always intrigued by Obama, so I would like to have dinner with him. I don't really tend to look up to people; I just get inspired by them. Next would be Albert Plesman, the founder of KLM, because it was quite bold to start an airline back then. And then, I think, Nelson Mandela, no explanation needed. ✈  What's the best piece of advice you've ever received? 🎉 My #HSR "Health & Safety Representative" journey, years 2018 to 2024 at Airways New Zealand and Airways International Ltd (AIL), saw us through the pandemic and many more. 💘 A special thanks to our #Airways "Safety and Assurance" team for their leadership, advisements, mentorship and koha - Kim Nichols, Shelly Sydney, Becca Hughes, Greer Alsop, Jody Henry over the years. Thank you for looking after HSRs across the country, so we in turn, can look after our teams effectively. And to my colleagues who have trusted in me for my care over the many years, thank you. (I'm going to miss the yearly Christmas chocolates.) 🚶♂️ Stepping down this year, I've taken that notch up from being a HSR into #Coaching, where the same values apply. Here I am, playing a more active part in the workforce offering my skillsets, directly influenced by my role as a HSR to make the world a better place. 🌍 I recall in my 2023 Airways H&S Conference trip report, reflections I've written/referenced: ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ "Attitude is everything! The longer we live, the more we realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude is more important than facts. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change the past; we can only affect the future. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is decide what our attitude will be.
