ZeroAvia has signed an agreement with newly-launched British airline Ecojet S.A. for up to 70 hydrogen-electric, zero-emission engines. Ecojet, working with Monte, the preferred lessor partner of ZeroAvia, plans to retrofit its aircraft with ZeroAvia’s ZA600 engines once certified. ZeroAvia is targeting 2025 for type certification of the ZA600. In the meantime Ecojet is set to begin operations with conventionally-powered aircraft operating routes to and from Edinburgh. The airline has also placed a larger order for the more powerful ZA2000 engine, designed for up to 80 seat regional turboprops. ZeroAvia is aiming for entry-in-service in 2027. “We don’t have to give up flying to live a green lifestyle or to get to net zero as a country – and this is big news,” said Dale Vince, founder, EcoJet. “The technology is here now and the planes are coming very soon – carbon free, guilt free flying is just around the corner. And although aviation is responsible for only a small part of all global emissions, it occupies a far bigger space than that in our psyche,” he explained. “The hearts and minds value of this new opportunity outweighs the carbon issue significantly. It shows that everything we need to do, can be done, with a low to zero carbon footprint. And that is big news and a big encouragement to us all.” ZeroAvia, Ecojet and MONTE will work together with industry partners like airports, to define and finance the first pathways to hydrogen-electric commercial operations. ZeroAvia claims analysis shows that domestic flights in the UK would have lower lifecycle carbon emissions per passenger than any other common mode of transport today if powered by wind-generated green hydrogen. This includes fully occupied cars, domestic rail and coach travel. CLC Signatories Air New Zealand and Toyota New Zealand Limited, alongside Wellington Airport and Hiringa Energy, have come together to trial using hydrogen to charge Air New Zealand's electric tugs and service vehicles, the first use of hydrogen in an aviation setting in Aotearoa. "Green hydrogen is starting to be used around the world as a low-emission fuel for buses, trucks, trains, and boats. Aircraft are the logical next step and successful test flights are already underway overseas. The biggest challenge here in New Zealand, is setting up the supply, transport and infrastructure to support fuelling the aircraft. This trial is an important first step to enable the development of that system," said Air New Zealand Senior Sustainability Manager Jacob Snelgrove. As part of our journey to Net Zero, we’re performing fully electric turnarounds for Wizz Air at Budapest Airport, reducing carbon emissions from the ground handling process by around 80% per aircraft. 🎉 🔌 This has been made possible through our electric first approach, which means a growing percentage of our Ground Support Equipment (GSE) can be powered using renewable energy. Over 40% of our GSE in Europe is now electric from baggage tractors and belt loaders to passenger steps with solar panels. Surcar Airlines Selects ZeroAvia Engines for Clean Seaplane Flights in the Canary Islands! ZeroAvia and new operator Surcar Airlines have joined forces to introduce green flights to the Canary Islands. ZeroAvia will be providing its ZA600 hydrogen-electric engines to power this exciting initiative. Surcar Airlines is committed to spearheading the electrification of aviation, and plans on using Twin Otter seaplanes retrofit with the ZA600 powertrain on sightseeing tours. They will begin operations with conventionally powered aircraft, with future plans to transition to hydrogen-electric engines to completely eliminate in-flight emissions, resulting in significant reductions in climate and air quality impacts. James Peck, Chief Customer Officer, ZeroAvia, said: “The Canaries are a perfect use case for the earliest zero-emission flights, given the opportunity for replacing combustion engines on short island-to-island routes. An ambitious idea to start an airline in the current industry landscape. It will be interesting to follow how these guys do and see if the technology will be mature enough to allow them to start as a fully hydrogen operator.

ZeroAvia has signed an agreement with Surcar Airlines Hidroaviones to provide its hydrogen-electric engines as the new carrier looks to bring “green flights” to the Canary Islands. Surcar plans to use Twin Otter seaplanes retrofitted with ZeroAvia’s ZA600 powertrain on sightseeing tours. The newly launched airline is backed by investors including the Danish carrier NORDIC Seaplanes. Surcar Airlines will begin operations with conventionally powered aircraft, the next step will be switching to hydrogen-electric. Gerardo Morales-Hierro, founder and CEO, Surcar Airlines, said: “Millions visit each year to see the incredible natural beauty and world heritage sites here in the Canary Islands. Climate change threatens this and our way of life. Working with ZeroAvia will help us to deliver cleaner flights, while also fostering positive impacts on the local community and the environment.” ZeroAvia is on track for certification of its 600kW engine for 9-19 seat aircraft over the next two to three years and has a deal in place with De Havilland of Canada, type certificate holder of the Twin Otter. Key to achieving these targets is forging partnerships with airports that are embracing clean and renewable energy, like Budapest Airport (BUD) in Hungary.   Having invested in the charging infrastructure necessary for electric equipment, with all energy coming from renewable sources, we’re able to work with BUD to perform fully electric turnarounds for our customers, such as Wizz Air. This helps to reduce carbon emissions from the ground handling process by 80% per aircraft. 🙌   🔌 Key to achieving these ‘green turns’ is our ‘electric first’ approach, which means an ever-growing proportion of our Ground Support Equipment (GSE) can be powered by renewable energy rather than diesel. With Net Zero being a hot topic over the last few years, one of the more puzzling debates recently has been "Can aviation ever be sustainable"? Some companies took this challenge head-on and followed the automotive industry in trying to switch over to electric motors, with work going into small air taxis as seen showcased in New York in 2021, all the way up to ambitions to successfully equip passenger and cargo planes with all-electric engines. There has been mixed progress, with one of the oldest and most established aviation engineering businesses in existence (Rolls Royce) looking to offload their electric aviation division. They are adamant that the future of sustainable air travel does not lie with electric motors, but with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Many in the community thought this was a step backward, but fast forward to last week, and we have seen Virgin send a Boeing 787 across the Atlantic purely on SAF! This is a massive breakthrough and really sets a benchmark for all aviation businesses: it is doable, it is possible, and most importantly, it is green!
