MENAS’s work at sea in the Gulf, providing and maintaining Aids to Navigations for use by all vessels, can be extremely dangerous. Therefore, its primary focus is protecting it employees by taking preventive measures to avoid risks that can cause accidents. On this the 'Day of the Seafarer 2024' we take a look at 10 of the many ways MENAS increases safety for its seafarers while working at sea: 1. Provision of safety equipment in the form of life saving appliances, firefighting appliances, and fire detection equipment. All members of the operations team have essential safety training: offshore sea survivals, First Aid, Firefighting/H2S Breathing apparatus. 2. Ensuring that where equipment and machinery is used safety requirements are met and risks avoided. 3. Providing training, instruction, information, and supervision to ensure the HSE policy is effective. 4. Ensuring that staff are kept up to date with safety regulations and best practice. 5. MENAS’s employees are instructed to always wear full protective safety clothing and accessories. 6. Conducting a periodic inspection for all lifting equipment’s to ensure their safety, absence of any damages, ability to hold the large weights and to prevent its cutting while lifting the buoys or moorings which may cause accidents. 7. During an operation if weather deteriorates, causing wave heights to exceed 1.1m, or if the wind speed exceeds 17 knots (when outside of port breakwater), work is immediately postponed. 8. Emergency drills that simulate different scenarios such as fire, casualty recovery, piracy, abandonment of ship, man overboard. These are held during the voyages with assigned roles assigned in case for real situations. 9. All safety and emergency equipment on a vessel is assessed before commencing a voyage. 10. A point of contact is established with the authorities in each critical location such as oil fields and restricted areas for any emergency situations. MENAS would like to extend its appreciate and support to all its seafarers and rest of the seafarers around globe and thank them for invaluable work they would. Please see check out our highlights video for showcasing the invaluable work they do. Thank you to you all. #safetytipsatsea.

Happy International Day of Seafarers SAFETY PART 2 MY TOP TIPS FOR SAFETY AT SEA Charting the course to seafarer's safety 1. Drills, mustering and exercises- It is important to know your vessel's emergency plan, emergency plans and drills prepare you to have a well-coordinated plan in case of any emergency. The mustering system imposes a sense of order and discipline aside from using it to know the state of the crew. Regular exercise involving the shoreside of the company is a sign that the company prioritizes safety. 2. Beware of complacency - Follow proper procedures for handling cargo, operating machinery, and navigating the ship to prevent accidents. Complacency and overconfidence have claimed many lives, don't be a victim. 3. Enclosed space entry - if you are not sure whether a space is confined, consider it to be. Some best practices are - ventilate 24 hrs before entry, ensure continuous ventilation, obtain a permit, ensure oxygen is 21%, toxic gases are not present, and explosive gases are not within their flammability range (portable gas meter and oxygen analyzer would be needed). Also, is a watch stander in place? Is there a rescue plan in place? And is there a specific time allocated for the job? Note: never go in to rescue an unconscious person in an enclosed space on your own without a proper rescue plan in place; you might become the second victim. 4. Distraction lessens productivity - Even super captains make mistakes when they become distracted, maintaining a high level of professionalism is needed to ensure adequate concentration. 5. Report any safety hazards, near misses, or incidents to the designated safety officer or supervisor immediately. Onboard tanker ships, report any suspected cargo smell or cargo leaks; This can save a life or the entire crew. 6. Stay updated on safety regulations and industry best practices to ensure compliance, this would help you stay focused, alert and assertive and essentially prevent accidents. importantly take care of your physical and mental well-being - get enough rest, enjoy your work, stay motivated and keep in touch with your family. Happy celebration and I hope you always have safe operations and a safe voyage. #SafetyTipsAtSea #MaritimeEducationAndTraining Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency International Maritime Organization Maritime SheEO International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)

Day of the Seafarer: Safety Tips at Sea Today is the International Maritime Organisation’s Day of the Seafarer, a day where we honour the dedication and hard work of seafarers around the globe. This year, the focus is on safety tips at sea. Cosmin Cojocaru, Electro Technical Officer on CLdN’s vessel MV Delphine, shares his insights about safety on board a CLdN ship. “My job revolves around safety. Our daily routines are built on rigorous safety protocols and continuous training. We have regular emergency drills such as fire, abandon ship drill and many other drills and trainings to ensure that every crew member is briefed and knows exactly what to do in case of an emergency. Good communication is a fundamental part of our safety culture, ensuring that everyone knows their responsibilities and actions. Safety is not just a routine; it’s a responsibility we all share. Our commitment to safety ensures not only our well-being but also the efficient operation of the Delphine.” Here are Cosmin’s top five safety tips for seafarers: ⚓ Wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): Always wear the appropriate PPE for your tasks such as helmets, safety shoes and gloves. This will protect you from potential hazards. ⚓ Be aware of your surroundings: Stay vigilant and mindful of your surroundings to avoid accidents. ⚓ Analyse situations: Assess the risks and plan your actions carefully before undertaking any task. ⚓ Communicate well: Clear and concise communication with your team is essential to ensure everyone is on the same page. ⚓ Avoid distractions: Never use items like phones that can distract you from your duties and compromise safety. #InternationalDayoftheSeafarer #SafetyTipsAtSea #internationalmaritimeorganization #cldn

🚢 Ensuring Safety at Sea: The Importance of Onboard Maintenance 🔧 As a deck officer, I can't emphasize enough the role of onboard maintenance in ensuring safety at sea 🛠️ Regular maintenance is not just about keeping the ship running smoothly, it's about safeguarding lives and protecting the environment. ⚓ Safety First: Every piece of equipment, from radar systems to lifeboats, must be in top condition to respond effectively to any situation that arises. 🔧 Routine Checks: Daily inspections and maintenance routines are the backbone of safety onboard. Whether it's testing communication systems or inspecting life-saving equipment, every detail matters. 🌊 Stick to the Rules: Compliance with maritime regulations isn't just a box to tick, it's a commitment to the safety of everyone on board and the marine environment. 🛳️ Preventing Accidents: Regular maintenance helps prevent accidents before they happen. Thanks to Safety committees and Near-Miss meetings it is possible to predict and prevent accidents on board, by learning from near misses and past incidents, we can identify potential risks and take proactive measures to avoid them. Holding meetings with the crew to train them as best as possible and inform them about the dangers they face every day. 🔄 Continuous Improvement: Beyond compliance, a culture of continuous improvement ensures that safety standards evolve with the industry. Regular training and feedback loops are crucial in this aspect. ⏰ Time and Dedication: It takes time and dedication to maintain a ship to the highest standards, but the safety of the crew, passengers, and the marine environment is worth every effort. Let's sail with confidence, knowing that our commitment to maintenance keeps us safe and sound on the open seas. ⛵️🌊 #SafeSailing #OnboardMaintenance #SafetyAtSea #MaritimeSafety #RoutineMaintenance #ShipSafety #AccidentPrevention #SafetyFirst #Dedication

Specifically, OSHA determined the company failed to do the following: Train dive teams in equipment use, techniques and emergency procedures required to perform underwater tasks safely, and to make sure all dive team members had CPR training. Assess water conditions before diving and require an experienced dive team member to supervise dredging operations in a canal with limited visibility. Provide workers with a safe practices manual when performing underwater diving and maintain a first aid kit, emergency aid list, resuscitator equipment and emergency procedures. Brief workers on basic diving procedures and environmental conditions. Assess the safety and health aspects of the diving mode, the underwater conditions or emergency procedures. Provide employees with safety harnesses to assist an injured diver from the water, a two-way communication system, a marked umbilical in 10-foot increments, a non-return valve on the surfaced-supplied air, a life jacket or buoyant work vest and a lifesaving skiff. Keep air compressor intakes away from areas containing exhaust or contaminants. Record equipment modifications, tests, calibrations, or maintenance service.
